Classified Staff Organization

Congratulations to Lucy Loewen
2008 CSO Employee of the Year

and to all the nominees

Harold Adkins

This person works early mornings, late nights or weekends to clean residence hall rooms to make sure they are ready for incoming students, prospective students or overnight visitors.  He is a kind individual who likes to stay "out of the limelight", but quietly does his work in a timely manner and always goes above and beyond.  He often will come in over the weekend (without being asked) to make sure the halls are clean and look good should parents visit their sons or daughters. He has a nice report with the students and staff alike.  He is an outstanding employee and deserves credit for his exemplary performance.

Our office typically gets last minute requests from high school students to spend a night in the residence halls.  This means that "someone" has to make sure the entire suite is clean and there are linens on the bed, paper products in the bathroom and in the kitchen, and the heat/air are set at a comfortable level.  In the day-to-day functions of taking care of two large residence halls, this is an extra chore to complete in often a very quick turnaround.  This employee never complains, but stops by the office to check and see how many people will be staying, in which rooms, and then lets the office know immediately after the rooms are prepared.  After the guests leave, he has to go in and clean both the bedrooms and suite in which the student(s) stayed.  He also has to launder the linens that were used and prepare them for the next visit.  All of this is completed in a timely manner and with a smile.

He shows professionalism through his position as a custodian by keeping the halls clean.  He is always clean and dressed appropriately and makes sure he visits with everyone that comes into the halls. He is thoughtful of the residents and does not vacuum or shampoo carpets until later in the mornings so he doesn't awaken them.  He strives to make sure the halls are kept clean and orderly and makes use of every minute of his day to go above and beyond.

Our office doesn't have any money to send any of our staff to professional development workshops and I am not sure he would want to go as he is in a custodial position and he isn't one that likes that sort of thing.  He does not "actively volunteer" for community service events, but quietly does a lot for the college and the community on his own.  He will clean the sidewalks and dumpster areas around the halls, clean the lawns by picking up trash and bottles, and always is looking for ways to improve the looks of the grounds. He very much contributes to community service activities by being a quiet observer who simply takes care of things.

This employee, although classified as a custodian, will trim branches, sweep and hose sidewalks, clean lawn areas of trash and bottles and makes sure that not only the building looks good, but the grounds surrounding his buildings.

He has single-handedly torn down beds and moved them so painters could come into rooms to paint.  If someone says something can't be done, he usually manages to "get it done."  He is proud of the work he does.  He has a very good work ethic and doesn't expect anything except his paycheck.  He works very hard and deserves recognition for his exemplary service to LCSC.

Donnie Anderson

He rides a lawnmower 8 hours a day, that is not easy to do.

He is always available to lend a hand.

Sharon Auer

S/he was always very helpful to me when I was a student and now that I work here s/he is a great asset to me.  S/he makes working here look easy. Being a non-traditional student wasn't easy for me.  I came from a labor workforce not an office setting.  S/he helped me with the transition.  And s/he is usually very happy.  That always makes a big difference when working with someone.

S/he is always willing to go the extra steps needed to help not only students and faculty but also classified and professional staff.

I know that s/he has helped me with my own professional development whenever I have questions if s/he doesn't know the answer s/he knows where to find it.  I have served on numerous committees with this person.

I know that s/he has served on lots of committees and is always on hand when the division needs help with extra curricular activities.

Mary Browne

-she keeps herself informed to make sure LCSC is adhering to Federal Financial Aid rules and regulations

- she is always thinking of ways to improve student services

She spent hours researching how to display the student statements on-line and worked with IT to make it happen.

-she works many additional nights and weekends at the beginning of each semester to ensure that residual checks are available to students.

-she spends extra time with students if they have questions regarding their health insurance, financial aid, Perkins loans etc.

-she shares her knowledge with others in the office and is willing to take the time to teach.

 - attends conferences/classes that help her grow in her position and help improve LCSC's service to the Community.

- takes advantage of the expertise of fellow LCSC employees or other contacts she has made, asking them to teach her.

- she is the Financial Director of the Asotin-Garfield County Thrivent for Lutherans Chapter.

attended the National Datatel Users Group meeting in WA DC in March and is already talking about the need to learn about the Archiving abilities and how it can be applied to LCSC.  This may help increase processing speed of some Datatel functions or reporting.

Roseanne English

She sends our all the correspondence to applicants, and she takes the time to personalize every letter so the applicant gets the right information specific to them.

She has been here at LCSC for so long, and has given the same service since she started.

Brian Graham

He worked weekends for about 2 years until about 3 months ago, and now he works fulltime during the week.  I feel that he is an unknown hero for keeping LCSC up and running on weekends, and threw the week.  He never complains and always is the first to help anyone in need. He takes on jobs that he has to research to get what the campus wants done, sometimes on a weekly basis.

He will come in on his days off to help out with what ever is needed.

Denise Harris

She has been a dedicated, active, professional member of the Career & Advising team for over twelve years. Her responsibilities have changed many times over her tenure with CAS, yet her commitment has remained steady.  Her services are crucial to the operations of the office and the delivery of services to both students and other departments in Student Services. She is thorough, precise, and strives for perfection in her work. She seeks to streamline and create efficient methods of performing the administrative tasks of her position. She consistently offers creative suggestions for the effective delivery of the programs we provide.

She demonstrates excellent customer service to the students we serve, the public who approach us with questions about the college, and other campus staff with whom we coordinate programs.

She is always open, friendly and helpful with anyone who stops into our office. Her sense of "can do" regardless of the obstacles presented has the almost magical effect of reducing stress and enabling others to work in a relaxed atmosphere.

She is integrally involved in the coordination and management of STAR (Student Advising and Registration), offered at least ten times each year.  These events not only require superb organizational skills, but also the ability to listen, understand, show compassion, and to demonstrate outstanding customer service. She communicates with participants organizing and delivery of data not only within our department, but the dissemination of data to multiple campus departments. Her responsibilities with this program are central to the successful administration of the registration of hundreds of new students to LCSC. Most importantly, she maintains calm in the midst of chaos…every time!

One Student Assistant who works in our office noted that her patience and professionalism was extremely valuable to her when she began working in CAS:  “She always knows the right thing to say to students. This was very helpful to me when she was training me because sometimes I felt that I had no clue what I was doing!”

She is completely dedicated to the concept of providing excellent customer service to those who approach our office for assistance (whether that be students, potential students, LCSC alumni, LCSC faculty/staff, or employers). She provides effective information to the student who calls on the phone, emails or visits our office. In some instances, the student has an unusual situation that does not involve our services, but she will assist the individual in locating the correct information or finding where they need to go to resolve their question.  She may be involved with a complicated project, but will ALWAYS stop to help with a cheerful attitude to those who need personal assistance. She will not quit until either the job is done or the person's needs have been met.

She is an active member of CSO and has been involved in endeavors such as the Annual Book Sale, Cook Book, and Recognition Committee. She is actively involved with her church in various ways. She was involved in an auction that raised money to support the Emergency Rescue Team at Three Rivers.

She is not a person who enjoys being in the spotlight when it comes to service. She is, however, a dependable member of every group in which she chooses to be involved. One example of her service to CSO was typing recipes, on her own time, for the CSO cookbook and writing personalized birthday cards to send to members.

Tess Hendriks

S/he works diligently to make sure our AmeriCorps program meets all the restrictions and qualifications of both the federal and state audits as well as the audit performed by our state commission.  Our "good job" has been recognized by the state and she is the one responsible.  S/he also promotes our program and the college any chance s/he has one on one or to a group. Daily in our office s/he answers questions, provides direction and takes the time to share knowledge.

This would be the program audits mentioned above.

S/he sets the standard that all the other staff strive to achieve.  S/he keeps the office running smoothly both here and in our regional office.  S/he makes sure we are all aware of our responsibilities to the program, the college and the public as well as the AmeriCorps members and sites. This is all done with a sense of humor as well as patience and insight.  S/he manages time so program requirements are met for both LCSC and the LC Service Corps

S/he attends professional development opportunities offered by both the college and the state commission. S/he has also attended the national conference and financial management conference representing both LCSC and LC Service Corps.

Training at the college through the professional development workshops as well as our program training sponsored by the state commission -- Serve Idaho.

The grants that this employee administers are very complicated and have very detailed requirements.  This individual has led the way nationally by developing systems to ensure we meet the highest level of accuracy and record-keeping.  S/he has developed extensive policies and procedures manuals which allow our program to quickly adjust to changes imposed by federal legislation and rule-making.

His/her experience with our program is valuable to everyone associated with it and has been a big part of our success.  S/he can quickly answer complicated questions which lends itself to building credibility both on and off campus.  Our program is now the 15th largest of its kind in the U.S. thanks in part to the efforts of this employee.

Our program shares an office with another department which only has part-time coverage.  This employee always graciously helps visitors to the other department, even going so far as to walk them to the correct location.

This employee exemplifies what it is to be CSO employee of the year and it’s an honor to nominate him/her.

Last year, our program underwent an audit by the Office of the Inspector General.  For two weeks, auditors reviewed our documentation, financial transactions, policies and record-keeping and this employee was their primary contact.  Thanks to this employee’s efforts, the audit findings were minimal and we were only obligated to pay back a small amount of grant funding.  Other programs in the country were not so lucky and ended up repaying hundreds of thousands of dollars in some cases.  In one instance, program staff was jailed and the program disbanded because of inaccurate record-keeping and inappropriate expenses.

It’s because of the checks and balance system implemented by this employee and the rest of the staff that our program is continually recognized for displaying best practices in the field.

This employee is always at work early and stays focused on his/her duties throughout the day.  S/he effectively communicates with our staff and with staff across campus and throughout the state.  S/he follows through with all required tasks and follows up when requiring additional information or assistance.  S/he is results orientated and sets and attains work-related goals.  In addition, s/he consistently meets challenging deadlines while maintaining an excellent attitude.  S/he is a valuable asset to both our program and the college.

This employee is no stranger to service.  I can count on him/her to step forward to volunteer for additional duties including overseeing community service projects that our participants are involved in.  This year, s/he coordinated a large crew who painted a Habitat for Humanity home in Post Falls.  S/he has volunteered to serve as a trainer for various orientation sessions our program sponsors.  S/he holds a bachelor’s degree in English from LCSC.  This has been a great asset to our department and we rely on him/her to proofread our documents prior to distribution.  It’s a task that she happily accepts.

In addition, s/he serves on the by-laws committee for CSO and participates in many of their activities including the annual Professional Development Day.  S/he has taken advantage of many professional development classes on campus and shares what s/he learns with staff.  I have been able to call on him/her to participate in conference calls and webinars that will assist our program and help it grow in the future.

Most importantly, on Friday evenings, s/he is the doting babysitter of his/her young granddaughter.

Each year, we take our program participants to a three-day training session organized by our parent organization.  This employee can always be counted on to lead a community service team.  S/he ensures helps motivate the participants, interacts with the organization using volunteers, and always rolls up his/her sleeves to lead the way.  His/her positive attitude is infectious and participants always leave the service project with a good feeling and a desire to continue doing good works in the community.

Patty Leonard

She has not only served as past chair of CSO, but is presently chair-elect and will be Chair of CSO next year.  She has chaired the Professional Development Day Committee since its inception 6 years ago.  She has worked tirelessly to create a wonderful event each year, which is an event that includes people from outside LCSC. She is also an officer for the state employees organization of IPEA, giving LCSC a face and a voice for state employees at the state level.

She is always delightful to work with.  She always goes the extra mile to make sure that your needs are being met.  She is cheerful, highly competent, and dedicated to her work.  She is a wealth of information regarding processes and procedures within the Academic Programs area.

She epitomizes the person supporting professional development through her activities on the Professional Development Day Committee.  And, along with her involvement with the IPEA, which is an organization outside of LCSC, she also spends time each year teaching archery for Kids' College.  Her enthusiasm and willingness to share her talents as an archer provides a valuable service to the college and the children in the community.

Lucy Loewen

She has been a true ambassador for LCSC through her professional and positive interaction with students, local citizens, contractors, and state officials. Often the first face or voice encountered by our customers or people with problems and concerns--she always goes the extra mile to help them with their situations, follows through to solutions, and deals with people with tact, compassion, and common sense.  She pitches in without hesitation to assist other offices at LCSC when they need a helping hand.

She is a member of the CRC, policy committee, helps with commencement line up, etc.

She is a strong advocate for all CSO efforts.  She has put her neck out for this group to ensure equal and consistent treatment.  She represents herself well and in a professional manner.

She attends classes part time and participates in a number of professional development classes and seminars.

She participates in community service organizations in regards to our military and has aided in putting on community military workshops.  She maintains a volunteer status and collects items to help in the military effort.

Lawrence Norris

This person has a professional and energetic approach to all that he does for the College.  He is customer oriented and strives to provide the highest quality of service.  He is an asset to the College as he is always willing to work extra hours to accommodate a customer, which include volunteer hours.

He has been called at home on different occasions to come back to the College to help a customer.  He has never hesitated to respond and help with the situtation.

He is often seen at after hour events working, but he is not on the clock.

Details are very important to this man.  The satisfaction of the customer, students, staff, administration or faculty, is his highest priority.  The smallest customer request is given the same dedication and time as the larger ones.

He treats everyone with respect and he is never too busy to lend a helping hand to his LCSC family.

He plans well and has the ability to be deal with last minute changes in scheduling. He is always willing to help clients and make their experience at LCSC a positive one.

During the SKILLS USA conference for high school students, he was ask to set up several items at the last minute.

He works well with fellow employees and spends extra time making sure he has satisfied client needs.

Has taking training in IVC development.

Works well with community groups including Community band and Civic theater.

Carolyn Quintero

S/he has devised ways to keep faculty, staff, and students apprised of deadlines that will effect their performance at LCSC.  When asked to make a change or update information s/he is prompt to respond when the change has been made, often before you can hardly turn around the task will be done. S/he will study a problem or issue and come up with a solution that will work to help many people even if it infringes on his/her personal time.

When serving on a CSO committee the need arose for a photographer s/he volunteered without hesitation.  This included coming back to campus to take some pictures at 6 pm, well after the work day had ended.

She is willing to help and answer questions from students, faculty, and staff with courtesy, knowledge, and in an unpretentious manner.  This happens even when she has been asked the same question 400 times before and each asker is treated as if they are the only one that has asked that question of him/her.  S/he has stated numerous times that it is very important to him/her to do a job right the first time even if it means asking many questions of others.

S/he has attended many of the professional development trainings offered on campus.  S/he is a member of IACRAO, a state/national group related to his/her job. S/he has attended specialized training in Washington, DC also related to his/her job. When a student on this campus s/he was an AmeriCorp Member, volunteered at the Lewiston Humane Society, was an Orientation Assistant for Warriorientation, and an officer in the Ambassador’s Club.

Currently s/he is the Chair-elect of IACRAO and has attended national conferences for this group representing LCSC.

Ellen Thompson

S/he has performed beyond the “call of duty” on so many occasions.  S/he is constantly volunteering for different committees on campus and s/he will accept on the ones that s/he is asked to be on.  S/he always puts forth an effort that is by far in the best interests of the Classified Staff Organization and the institution as a whole.  S/he brings new ideas to the table and improves the service and quality of the projects s/he works on.

An example of this excellent service, the Classified Staff Organization’s Recognition Committee Chair left the college.  With little hesitation S/he stepped up and accepted the role as Chair.  In her short term s/he has coordinated a cookbook that has made over $1000.00 for the CSO; s/he has organized what will be a great social that is different than the past socials.  S/he has brought much needed enthusiasm and innovative new ideas.

As I stated above s/he is ready to step in when s/he is needed and willing to provide service.  S/he will provide guidance on any issues s/he has experience with and is willing to listen to new ideas and accept them.  S/he is never one to say nos/he has a can do attitude.  S/he is willing to talk to anyone and listen to complaints.

S/he has attended various Professional Development Day activities throughout her service at LCSC.  S/he was on the starting committee that developed the professional development classes on the campus.  This has been a great resource and training tool for the Classified Staff Organization and the campus as a whole.

Because of people leaving the CSO officers council for a variety of reasons s/he has been a constant resource and wealth of information for the new officers.

Andy Tuschhoff

This person never puts off what is asked of him.  When given multiple projects he always turns out a product that is superior in quality and creativity and he does so in a timely fashion.  I've never seen him upset or stressed even when pressured to produce things in an otherwise ridiculous time frame.  He is amazing.

He was asked to print a program, create tickets, print a brochure, and create a logo, all within a week's time and amazingly he got it done without any questions or problems.

Everything he does is extremely professional.  He offers ideas that help reduce time and heighten efficiency.  He is always finished with projects ahead of schedule and we know we can count on him to deliver a very professional product.
