Read&Write Learning Assistance Tool Designed For You

LCSC students, faculty and staff have FREE access to Read & Write, an award-winning literacy software tool that can help students improve reading, writing, research and study skills. Read & Write also has a variety of tools that benefit the English Language Learner who may struggle with reading fluency, comprehension, and word pronunciation.

The R&W Toolbar for Windows (shown below) sits at the top of the computer screen so its features can be used with any application that is open (Word Documents, PDF’s, Power Points, Web Browsers).

Spell Check
Spell Check icon
Click this button to perform a Spell Check on a document.  Hover over words in the suggestions list o hear read aloud.
Prediction icon
Click this button to open or close the word prediction window. Start typing and words will be predicted.
Dictionary Dictionary icon Click this button when you have selected a word to look up in the dictionary. Alternatively, click the button before selecting a word, then type the word into the text box. Definitions can be read aloud by clicking play.
Picture Dictionary  Picture Dictionary icon Displays images from Widget Symbols to help suport fluency and understang.
Text to Speech  
Text to Speech icon
 Reads text aloud in Word docs, on the web and more, with dual color highlighting and natural-sounding voicess.

Highlight or place your cursor in front of some text, and click the Play button.  Use additional controls to rewind, fat forward, plause and stop speech playback.

Converts inaccessible text to accessible text through OCR.  Click the icon and then drag your mouse to draw a rectangle arounda any inaccessible text to OCR it on demand
Scan tool icon
 Click this button to OCR/Scan a paper document to PDF, Word, or HTML format.
Hightlights & Erase Highlights  Highlights Erase Highlights icons

 Allows users tohighlight and color code sections of tet on a page, to facilitate summarizing categorizin and higher order skill.sErase highlights from a page when you are done with them, by selecting highlights and clicking the Erase icon.

Collect Highlights  Collect Highlights icon

Collects your highlights into a new Word doc.

Adjust collection and bibliography settings in the Read&Write settings menu, under the Highlights section.

Vocabulary List  Vocabulary List icon

Builds vocabulary lists in a Word doc., including selected word, dictionary definitions, images from Widgit Symbols, and an editable notes column. 

Use colored highlighters to select words, then click icon to generate vocabulary list in a new Word doc. 

Settings  Settings icon Customize options for all the Reead&Write features, or use the Quick Access panel for frequently used settings.  About menu, video tours, and Support site.
Help  Help icon Click this button to access Texthelp's Support site, for help with common questions or issues.
