inequalities in one variable. Writing equations of lines; forms of
linear equations. Graphing linear equations and inequalities.
Solving systems of linear equations and inequalities. Introduction
to linear programming. Exponents and polynomials including
factoring. Solving quadratic equations using the zero product
property and the quadratic formula. Introduction to functions.
Unit analysis. Emphasis on problem solving. Introduction to
sets, permutations, and combinations. Taking
a math course on-line is somewhat different than taking courses in other
disciplines. You will learn new material by reading your book and by
watching videos and completing tutorials on the textbook publisher’s
website. This requires a high speed connection. You cannot download
these materials and take them home. They are on the publisher’s server.
You will do a lot of your homework using problem sets on the publisher’s
website. However, when we do word problems, you will need to download
an attachment with the problems. Once you have completed them, you will
need to scan them and e-mail them to me or fax them to me. To be
successful, you need easy access to a scanner or fax. There is a
significant amount of proctored quizzes and tests in this course. There
are 3 tests and a final exam. There are 20 “mastery skill quizzes.” If
you make a mistake on a quiz, you retake it. In terms of schedule, we
know that math is best learned in small chunks. To make sure this
happens, there are weekly deadlines for homework. Late work is not
accepted. The tests need to be taken within a two-day window. Do not
buy a used book for this course. You need access to the publisher’s web
site. The access code is only included with new books. I have arranged
with the publisher for a special price for the package that you need:
your textbook, a math study skills book, and the access code. This is
available only at the LCSC Bookstore. Pre-requisite: A grade of
"C" or better in MATH 15 or satisfactory placement score. Course
fee.
