Class Project/Presentation Guidelines

The main objective of this assignment is to provide an additional avenue for you to develop an answer to the question "what is globalization?" by:

1) gaining a better understanding of how the global and the local are connected and influence one another

2) strengthening your ability to discuss the globalization process in an informed manner, using concrete local examples to illustrate global phenomena.

Your project should communicate to the class a portion of your answer to the question "what is globalization?" and bring up the major issues that connect the globalization process to your community.

Some decisions you need to make before October 3rd.

1) Do you plan to work alone or with a group? You are strongly encouraged to work on your projects in groups of 2-4 people, but working in a group is not required. If you would like to work in a group, but don't know how to get involved in one, I'll be happy to facilitate the process as long as you don't wait until the last minute.

The length of presentation time required for group projects will be determined on a group by group basis. But it will be less than the combined individual required times. For example, if you work in a group of 3 people, your group will not be expected to design a 21-30 minute presentation. A more realistic goal would be 12-15 minutes depending on the format you choose. Your group will meet with me to determine this.

2) What part of the globalization process would you like to learn more about? In other words, you need to determine what the overall content of your presentation will be. What issue do you plan to deal with? If you need help with this, drop by (either alone or as a group) my office and lets talk about it.

3) How would you like to present your findings? Standing up in front of the class and talking is one way to present your findings to the class. However, your imagination is the only limitation to the kind of presentation you might design. You are strongly encouraged to work in video, radio, and digital media forms as well as to utilize whatever kinds of creative talents you might have. Create a 10 minute video/radio documentary about one aspect of the globalization process, design a web-page that illustrates how your community is connected to other communities around the world, write a one-act play on the issue you select, conduct a survey of people in your community. I am sure you can think of a lot of other options as well.

The format you chose to work in may also play a role in the length of time your presentation should be.

All of these decisions will be formalized by Oct. 4th when your (or your groups) project proposal is due. You are strongly encouraged to get your proposal approved by me before Oct. 4th so that you can begin working ASAP.

Your polished project is due Dec. 3rd.

Draft Title for Your Project

I. Content: What issue will your project address and how will it demonstrate connections between the local and the global? Make sure that you include a thesis statement.

III. Personnel: If you have formed a group that wishes to work together, all members of the group should be identified and a preliminary "task" breakdown for each member of the group.

IV. Sources: what kinds of sources do you plan to use for your project and how do you plan to access them?

V. Preliminary Bibliography: provide a brief list of a few books, articles, and websites that you plan to use (or have used) to further educate yourself on your topic.

VI. Timeline: provide a brief list of tasks that will need to be accomplished and realistic deadlines for completing these tasks.
