Why Engineering? – Some Joys and Challenges
 Joys Challenges
  • Creativity
  • Versatility
  • Respectability
  • Good starting salaries
  • Pride in product
  • Solve Problems
  • Improve lives
  • Teamwork
  • Challenging work
  • Time commitment
  • Not well understood
  • Classes are “hard”
  • Credit load
  • High expectations
  • Social perception
  • Teamwork
  • We don’t drive trains

What is the LCSC Engineering Program?
  • A 2-year Degree in Engineering
    • Associate of Science in Engineering
      • Credits will transfer to other accredited engineering programs
    • Special transfer programs in place with BSU & ISU
5
Why Engineering at LCSC?
  • Prepares you for any engineering field!
    • Introductory engineering coursework
    • Mathematics background
    • Physics and chemistry background
    • Complete Idaho core requirements
  • Keeps your options open
  • Close-knit environment
  • Provides you with top quality education
  • Let’s you work with great people!

6
Pluses for LCSC
engineering students
  • Small class size in engineering at LCSC
  • Students have good access to faculty mentors early on at LCSC
  • Good LCSC instructor knowledge of student capabilities prior to transfer elsewhere helps place students where they want to be
  • Full core program at LCSC gives added writing and critical thinking opportunities
  • Bonus of dual degrees in engineering from BSU and science or math from LCSC

7
Issues for engineering
transfer students
  • Transferring is not hard generally goes  quite smoothly, but…
  • LCSC engineering students are not competing with the same engineering student cohort they will find at the transfer schools
  • Different academic culture between schools
  • Final 2 years are engineering heavy relative to pre-engineering experience
  • Sometimes students may take longer to complete engineering major if not entering calculus-ready

8
LCSC Pre-Engineering 3/2 Program:
Idaho Schools Working Together
  • Maximize opportunities: Start at LCSC
    • 3 years at LCSC covering core and fresh/soph science and engineering
    • 2 years at transfer school finishing engineering requirements
    • Receive two degrees
      • BS – Science or Mathematics from LCSC
      • BS – Engineering from transfer school
  • LCSC courses are accepted as a group equivalent to courses at transfer school via articulation agreements with BSU, ISU
  • LCSC works closely with UI to facilitate smooth transitions
9
What is an articulation agreement?
  • An articulation agreement is just a formal agreement between schools about the rules for:
    • Which courses can be transferred
    • How many credits are accepted towards graduation
    • Criteria determining when degree requirements are satisfied
  • Articulation agreements make it easier for students to transfer
10
Advising in engineering
  • You may choose your advisor, but normally all engineering students at LCSC are advised by the program director, Dr. Jenni Light.
  • Before coming for advising each semester you should:
    • Plan a sample schedule and check for time conflicts and course availability
    • Make or update your 4-year plan to reflect any changes
    • Double check that your course choices satisfy program and degree requirements at LCSC and your transfer school
    • Write down any questions you have
11
What should I choose for my LCSC major?
  • Associate of Science in Engineering
  • If choosing to complete 3/2 program:
    • Any major at LCSC will work, but the easiest to complete when studying engineering are:
      • Mathematics
      • Natural Science Interdisciplinary Studies
12
Where can I get more information on the engineering program and courses?
