Faculty Senate Meeting Minutes
April 10, 2003

Call to Order: Meeting was called to order at 3:15 by Richard Moore, Chair.
Introduction of Visitors: Andy Hanson
Approval of Minutes:
Minutes were approved as amended.
New Business:
1. Andy Hanson presented a case for giving midterm grades. Reasons given included increasing the circle of staff who are aware in case of students at risk, midterm grades provide additional motivation for the student in the second half of the semester, reduces the need for progress reports and adds more information for making basic reports. Representatives are encouraged to take the recommendations regarding midterm grades back to their respective divisions.
2. Faculty Association treasury has received $814 in faculty contributions for the 2003 fiscal year. The total in the account is $2,463. The appropriated operating account is now at $742.
3. Provost List has been narrowed to 6. Only 4 will be interviewed. The first candidate will interview beginning 4/22/03. Breakfast sessions with the candidates and the Senate will be on the second day of each interview. There will be several opportunities for faculty and staff to meet candidates during the two days each will interview.
4. Faculty-Elect Recruiting- The chair is soliciting nominations for Chair Elect.
Reports:
1. Faculty Development Committee- Kim Flottemesch reported on
proposed changes to the sabbatical policy. Report of the policy was accepted
for a 1st reading with representatives being encouraged to take the
proposed changes back to Divisions for more input.
2. Budget Liaison – no report.
3. Curriculum – Larry Haapanen made the report. The items included deletion of General studies majors and addition of new emphases in AAS degrees. The report was accepted by the Senate.
4. Administrative Procedures- Mary Lou Robinson brought forward the latest proposed changes in the Periodic Performance Review for a second reading. The second reading was accepted. The second reading of changes in the Promotion-Tenure Policy was also presented. It was accepted by the Senate.
5. Faculty Affairs – Kathy Wilcox reported on 4 items. Evaluation of administrators will be submitted as a final recommendation in the Fall. No response has yet been received regarding revision of policy and contracts regarding lecturers. The FAC recommends to revise criteria of the Talkington Award to allow eligibility of lecturers. The Senate accepted the following motion: revise the criteria of the Talkington Award to be eligible to all full-time faculty, including lecturers. The FAC will be looking at the development of policies regarding dropping students for non-attendance. The report was approved by the Senate.
6. Provost – Rita Morris briefed the Senate on the upcoming NASC accreditation visit. Finalists for Dean positions will be announced soon. Budget scenarios are not yet determined but the administration hopes to have a report on 4/22/03.
