Curriculum Report to Senate
December 9, 2004

The Curriculum Committee has approved the following 83 proposals.

 BUSINESS DIVISION

Add new major Hotel/Restaurant Management:  A05-084

  • Justification:  There is a need for a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management.  Students at LCSC, as well as potential transfers from other state institutions, could complete four year degrees here.  The courses needed for this degree would be drawn from BTS and Business Divisions.

Add new minor Leadership:  A05-179

  • The Business Division is proposing a new minor in Leadership consisting of 8 classes. These classes include: COMM 205 - Logic and Argumentation, POLS 200 - Social and Political Philosophy, COMM 320 - Persuasion, BUS 311 - Foundations of Management Theory, BUS 360 - Leadership, ID 351 - Ethics and Leadership, BUS 494 - Internship in Leadership Project, and Choice of 300/400 leadership selective.  This multi-disciplinary degree option will grow the leadership skills of students.

Add new course Hotel/Restaurant Management (BUS 312):  A05-082
Add new course Foodservice Systems and Controls (BUS 325):  A05-083

  • These two courses are new courses needed for the effective delivery of the new proposed major in Hotel/Restaurant Management

Add new course Strategic Management Seminar (BUS 497):  A05-103

  • This proposal would formally establish a course that has been offered as a special topics course in the past.  The course was originally developed to offer a 400 level management course via distance delivery methods.

Add new course Ethics and Leadership (ID 351):  A05-178

  • This new course would examine the ethics and moral decisions involved in leadership.  It would also be a new General Education course.

Modification of Business Administration with Management Accounting Emphasis Major:  A05-081

  • Changes:  Change the general education core requirements to include any core Communications class in place of the COMM 202 or COMM 204. Delete the computer competency check and require BUS 221, Introduction to Computer Information Systems. Include BUS 220, Business Communications, to the selection list in the business core courses along with ENGL 203 or COMM 330. In the management accounting emphasis, delete the option of the 300/400 business selective and require ECON 465, International Economics.
  • Justification:  The Division has determined that the general education core requirement allowing any core communications class is satisfactory. The computer competency check was difficult to verify so BUS 221, Introduction to Computer Information Systems will be required to ensure students have necessary computer skills. With the development of BUS 220, Business Communications, the division wanted students to have the option of having another communications class specifically designed to meet the needs of business students. A change from an option of any business 300/400 level course was changed to ECON 465 due to the course content on the CMA exam.

Modification of Business Management Major:  A05-104

  • ChangesChange the general education course requirements to include any core communications class. Add BUS 220, Business Communications to the list of possible options along with BUS 101, ENGL 203, and COMM 330 in the major courses. Allow the students a choice of BUS 498 or BUS 497, Strategic Management Seminar in the upper division course list.
  • JustificationThe Division has determined that allowing any core communications class would be acceptable. Since the BUS 220 course was developed specifically for business students, it will be included as a possible option required by the major. BUS 497, Strategic Management Seminar was developed so students can take all their upper division courses on-line.

Change in catalog description for Strategic Management Seminar (BUS 497):  A05-124

BUSINESS & TECHNOLOGY SERVICES DIVISION

Add new course Pharmacology for the Medical Assistant (MEDPT 240):  T05-180

  • This new course would formally establish a course that has been delivered as a special topics course.

Change credits on Medical Assistant II (MEDPT 260):  T05-181

  • This would add one credit to the existing course.  This extra credit would be laboratory-based skill work

Change credits in Medical Assistant Program:  T05-182

  • Change:  Add MEDPT 240 Pharmacology for the Medical Assistant--3 credits and changed MEDPT 260 Medical Assistant II (from 3 to 4 credits) to Medical Assistant AAS program, for new total of 72 credits.
  • JustificationMore pharmacologic knowledge is needed for certified medical assistants and lab is needed for skills practice. These courses are needed to satisfy curriculum for accreditation standards.

Change in course prefix for GNBPT 097, GNBPT 097:  T05-089, T05-090

Change in course prerequisites for GNBPT 122, GNBPT 222, CITPT 214:  T05-091 through T05-093

Change in course title for Transcription (OFFPT 254):  T05-094

Add/change CIP codes for Office Technology Programs:  T05-112

EDUCATION DIVISION

Add new course Elementary Reading Methods (ED 320):  A05-118

  • This new course would allow the Education Division to oversee delivery of the above course through Independent Study of Idaho.  This course would allow teachers to fulfill certification renewal requirements via a distance delivery format.

HUMANITIES DIVISION

Change prerequisites on all 350/351 courses to completion of skill component of the General Education Core:  A05-033

  • ChangeStudents must have successfully completed the Skills Component of the General Education Core, outlined below, prior to enrolling in HUM/NS/SS/ID 350 or 351 courses: ENGL 101,ENGL 102; COMM 101, 102, 202, 203, 204, or 205; MATH 130, 130A&B, 157 & 257, 137, 143 & 144, 160, or 170 or MTHPT 123, 130, or 137. In addition, Junior Class Standing (58 or more completed credits) is recommended.  This replaces the old prerequisite of Junior Class Standing.
  • JustificationThe General Education Core Skills Component is designed to help students develop writing, communication, and mathematical skills that are foundational to a baccalaureate education. The current description of the Skills Component (catalog 03 - 05, p 6) asserts that it is to be completed during the freshmen year. Many students, however, do not complete portions of the Skills Component until their Senior year. This practice diminishes students' ability to benefit from the skills learned in these courses and can delay their graduations when they have to repeat a skills course they enroll in during what they hope will be their final semester. Requiring the completion of the Skills Component prior to enrolling in 350/351 ensures that students complete these courses before their final semester and better prepares them for advanced program courses in their chosen majors.

NATURAL SCIENCES DIVISION

Add new major Earth Information Systems:  A05-168

  • Justification:  This proposal combines elements of existing programs to create a new, very much in-demand major at LCSC. Over the past decade careers in the environmental sciences have undergone a shift in emphasis toward incorporation of spatial analysis with a resulting demand for employees with GIS skills. Our students have responded to this new paradigm by seeking updated spatial and computational skills coupled with a traditionally rigorous background in the natural sciences. The proposed EIS degree meets the need of students by offering a formal degree where LCSC was previously offering less specific options. EIS compliments the existing Geology option in the Chemistry major by offering an alternate path for students interested in careers that emphasize spatial analysis. EIS compliments the existing AAS technical degree and the GIS minor by offering students a BS degree that emphasizes GIS coupled with courses in the physical and computational sciences. This proposed major will help to drive enrollments in Geology, GIS and Computer Science courses, yet will not require development of any new courses at LCSC. It builds on one of the main strengths of the Natural Sciences Division at LCSC, that is a genuinely collaborative interaction among various disciplines within the sciences.

Add new course Immunology (BIOL 443):  A05-152

  • Immunology has grown tremendously in the past decade.  This course would serve Biology and Chemistry majors, as well as a possible elective for Nursing students.

Add new course Concepts in Cellular Mechanisms (BIOL 180):  A05-191
Add new course Diversity of Life (BIOL 181):  A05-157
Delete course Introduction to Life Sciences (BIOL 201):  A05-155
Change in course prerequisites for BIOL 202, BIOL 203, BIOL 301, BIOL 341 and BIOL 362:  A05-158, A05-160 through A05-163

  • Change:  This series of proposals would delete BIOL 201, a one semester introductory biology course and replace it with BIOL 180/181, a two semester introductory sequence.
  • JustificationExpansion of the introductory course will allow for a more comprehensive delivery of introductory biology and more appropriately prepare students for advanced biology courses. This action also will align us with other state institutions for transferability. Currently, LCSC is one of only two institutions in Idaho that attempt to teach introductory biology in a single semester.

Delete Information Systems Minor:  A05-177

  • Justification:  This minor has required courses from CS, BUS and GIS with optional courses from DPOBT and ISATI.  Recent assessment of the minor revealed very few graduates and no comprehensive goal or skill set.

Delete Visual Basic (CS 106):  A05-173
Delete UNIX for the Internet (CS 115):  A05-175

  • The courses duplicate content in the BTS Division.

Change in course level for Operating Systems (CS 330):  A05-095

  • This proposal would move Operating System from a 200 level course to a 300 level course.  Professional accreditation standards recommend delivery at the junior level and this change is consistent with other institutions in the state.

Change in catalog description for Ichthyology (BIOL 403):  A05-016
Change in catalog description for Genetics (BIOL 341):  A05-153

NURSING DIVISION

Change in credits for Foundations of Nursing (NU 210):  A05-087
Change in credits for Fundamentals of Nursing (NU 205):  A05-088

  • These two proposals would change the credit load in the above classes based on student and instructor evaluations.  Foundations of Nursing would move from a 3 cr. course to a 2 cr. course while Fundamentals of Nursing would change from a 3 cr. course to a 4 cr. course.  Overall credits in the program would be unaffected.

SOCIAL SCIENCES DIVISION

Add new course Africa and the World (HIST 333):  A05-069
Add new course The Past in the Present:  History in the News (HIST 444):  A05-071
Add new course Imperialism and the Modern World (HIST 336):  A05-072

  • The above proposals would formally establish courses that have been offered as special topics courses in the past two years.

Change in course prerequisites for SW 140, SW 241, SW 321, SW 322, SW 340, SW 385, SW 443, SW 495A/495 B:  A05-73 through A05-080

STUDENT SERVICES UNIT

Delete course Life Skills (SD 106):  A05-108
Delete course Professional Life Skills (SD 275):  A05-109

  • The content of the courses is duplicated in other Student Development offerings.

Change in course title for CAMP Class (SD 112):  A05-098

Change in catalog description for Applied Computer Skills (SD 096):  A05-099

TECHNICAL & INDUSTRIAL DIVISION

Delete course Applied Math for Electronics I/II (GENEL 152):  T05-114

  • This course duplicates content from MTHPT 103.

Delete the following ISATI courses:  114, 115, 210, 211, 212, 213, 214, 215, 216, 217, 218, 219, 220, 221, 311, 312, 335, 411, 412, 413, 414, 415, 416, 417:  T05-128 through T05-151

  • The above courses are no longer relevant to the ISATI program.

Change in Technical Certificate, Advanced Technical Certificate and AAS options for Industrial Electronics Technology:  T05-116, T05-121

  • Both of these proposals add more choices to the programs.  The increased flexibility will allow students to work towards an advanced specialization.

Change in course credits for IETTI 290, IETTI 296:  T05-047, T05-051

  • These proposals would allow IETTI 290 and IETTI 296 to be offered as variable credit courses.
