Faculty Senate 2004-05
Faculty Affairs Committee

FACULTY AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
MINUTES – JANUARY 24, 2005

I. Leanne Parker convened the meeting at 12:05 p.m.
PRESENT:  Leanne Parker, chair; Lana Elliott; Ray Esparsen; Rik Brosten, Michelle Sotka
GUESTS:  Chet Herbst, Barbara Kramer
ABSENT: Victor White, Diana Ames
RECORDING:  Ray Esparsen
II. MINUTES: Minutes from the November and December meeting were approved as written.
III. OLD BUSINESS
  A. Barbara Kramer addressed the issue of sick leave, retirement and benefits.  Her research indicates that LCSC benefits are not on par with peer institutions. Her concerns:  “if we do not defend these benefits, we will lose them”.  Barbara Kramer is willing to meet with other divisions and explain sick leave benefits and issues of retirement equity.  She is seeking input from faculty to determine if this is a general concern.
  B.  SRIs
Guest Speaker Chet Herbst addressed the history of SRIs and the need for shifting from hard copy to on-line response. The desire to maintain a hard copy SRI was discussed.  Chet Herbst stated this was neither feasible nor desirable due to space limitations.   He highlighted problems and points for consideration for changes in the SRI including avoiding relying solely on numeric choices, including opportunity for constructive feedback and adapting the Likert scale to include “Neither agree nor Disagree” as a replacement for “Unsure.”

A working sample of the proposed changes in SRIs was distributed.  Committee members will solicit feedback from their division/colleagues and report back to the committee.

The issue of flexibility in administering SRIs was discussed and recommended not to extend beyond finals week.  They should preferably be administered mid course.
  C.  Withdrawals:  Leanne Parker proposed that students who withdraw from a course with a failing grade have that information indicated on their transcript.
IV. NEW BUSINESS:  There was no new business
V. ADJOURNMENT:
The meeting was adjourned at 1:15 p.m.
The next Faculty Affairs Meeting will be held February 7th at 12:00 noon, Spaulding Hall 300.
  Respectfully submitted, Ray Esparsen 1/24/05
