Senate Snapshot
3/14/08
The groundbreaking for the new Nursing/Health
Sciences Building
took place on 3/7. It was a sunny, pleasant day
and perfect for the brief
ceremony. Lori Stinson and Matt Johnston gave
wonderful speeches about
the building and the Natural Sciences and NHS
programs. VP Herbst, Provost
Fernandez, President Thomas and Lt. Gov. Risch gave
great talks about
the building process and history of the project. We
should see activity on
the building site soon.
The Faculty Senate/Association Chair-elect
position is a good way to
be a part of faculty governance at LCSC. The
Chair-elect will be voted in
at the May Faculty Association meeting. Contact
Susan Odom or Brian
Christenson if you are interested or wish to
nominate a colleague.
The 23rd Annual Inland Northwest Regional
Spelling Bee took place here
on the LC campus last weekend, 3/8. Previously
unknown to me, the
Faculty Senate Chair is traditionally a judge at the
Bee. I learned about
it several weeks ago. There were two other judges
besides me. It was
lots of fun. I was told that the competition
normally lasts about 45 minutes.
Saturday’s event lasted 2½ hours. We had to get a
second, more advanced
spelling guide from the national sponsor to finish
the competition between
the last three best spellers. It was intense at
times. We judges even had
to watch the video once to determine if a judgment
we made was correct.
This happened after a parent challenged our first
decision. It was a long
afternoon, but it was neat to see all the elementary
kids do well. The
winner, Anna Grimaldi, will go the Washington DC for
the National finals.
Enjoy Spring Break!!!!
