I.
Meeting came to
order at 1:30pm.
II.
Minutes
of the November 8 meeting were approved as corrected.
III.
Howard Erdman
passed around examples of student evaluations. One from El
Paso Community College, developed by that College’s Senate.
Another from
the IDEA (Individual
Development & Educational
Assessment) Center, a not for
profit organization. A third evaluation form was passed around,
this from Pacific
Lutheran University. Differences with respect to the design,
types of questions
and overall format were discussed.
IV.
Jim Bowen (BTS)
expressed the concern of the BTS Division to pursue a
paper/pencil SCE. The BTS Division finds the online evaluation
format most
convenient due to computers in all BTS classes. Jim was not able
to attend
the meeting where the paper/pencil format was voted on and
approved by
the SCE PG committee. Moving to a paper/pencil evaluation is
also a concern
for online courses. As discussed in earlier meetings, the cost
of parallel
systems would be a problem but the possibility of having online
evaluations
is not ruled out.
V.
Moved to the order
of the day.
a.
Howard suggested a
discussion on the constructs that this committee
would like to suggest for the student course evaluations prior
to any
discussion on the specific questions.
b.
Discussion followed
regarding communication and feedback between
this Committee, Faculty Affairs and the Senate.
c.
Main concern with
the current evaluations is that the instrument be
used to evaluate faculty for tenure and promotions. The low
response
rate and quality of responses may not give a true picture of
faculty
performance.
d.
Discussion followed
as to the time line that this Committee has and
whether it would be feasible to do a Delphi study and or to
suggest
input from outstanding instructors and or from the faculty at
large.
e.
It was agreed that
we start by comparing the constructs of the
El Paso Community College evaluation and our current SCE.
f.
The issue of
comparing courses within the College was raised. It was
suggested that only a comparison between sections of the same
course be valid, but not across courses or across disciplines.
g.
It was agreed that
we prepare a list of identified concepts, what
elements will make up those concepts and the questions
that will
adequately measure those elements.
