II. Minutes
Minutes of the November 1 meeting were approved as corrected.
III. Discussion
The group discussed a variety of topics including the following:
A.
Review of PG-08-57:
Student Course Evaluation Analysis and
Recommendations;
B.
The differences
between formative and summative assessment/evaluation;
C.
The purposes of
student self-evaluation information, instructor evaluation,
and course evaluation;
D.
Reasons for and
against including student self-evaluation information;
E.
Use of Likert
scale;
F.
Use of student
evaluations results for improving instruction and as part
of general faculty evaluation;
G.
Concern by faculty
about results of course evaluations and affect on
merit pay schemes;
H.
Need to develop a
policy for the appropriate use of the SCE instrument
V. Substantive Conclusions
A.
The student
self-evaluation data collected in past wasn't used.
B.
Dr. Erdman will
attend division meetings as well as a Chair’s Council
meeting to talk about PG-08-57 and to discuss the progress of
the SCE
Task Force Committee.
VI. Action Items
A. The Task Force passed these resolutions unanimously:
1. Student self-evaluation questions will not be
included in the SCE
instrument.
2. The SCE instrument will use a Likert-scale with a
neutral data point
included in the scale
B. Dr. Erdman will bring copies of the following
evaluation instruments to
the next meeting:
1. “IDEA Survey Form – Student Reactions to Instruction
and Courses,”
developed by the Center for Faculty Evaluation and
Development.
2. “Credit Student Evaluation of Instructor
Performance,” developed by
the El Paso County Community College District.
C. Homework assignment
1. Start developing procedures for the administration
and use of the SCE.
We need to create a policy for the interpretation
of the data collected
and safeguards against misuse.
