What is the FAFSA?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, is your key to unlocking the mysteries of the Federal Student Aid programs. This document is the primary source for determining a student’s eligibility for need-based aid. The FAFSA must be completed if you are interested in receiving Federal Student Aid during the academic year. You should complete the FAFSA as early as possible after January 1. A FAFSA form may be picked up at your high school guidance office or at the LCSC Office of Financial Aid in Reid Centennial Hall. An electronic application is also available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov .

The information you report on your FAFSA is used to calculate an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) according to a formula set by Congress. The EFC is used to determine what federal and state aid you are eligible to receive.

How do I Complete the FAFSA?

While the FAFSA is not a difficult application to complete, it does take some time and effort. It will be beneficial for you and your parents to complete your tax returns as early as possible as much of the information on the FAFSA will come from these returns.*

You and/or your parents will need these documents to complete the FAFSA:

  • Federal Income Tax Returns
  • W-2’s
  • Business and Farm Records
  • Current Bank Statements
  • Records of stocks, bonds and other investments
  • Social Security benefits, retirement and other documents

*If you do not complete your Federal Income Tax Return in time to meet the March 1 Priority Deadline, you should use estimated figures on the FAFSA and update them at a later time.

Along with biological, financial and personal information, you must indicate you want LCSC to receive your SAR in order for the school to receive your results.

LCSC’s school code is:
001621

If you have specific questions on completing your FAFSA you can contact the LCSC Financial Aid Office or use the Guide to Completing the FAFSA website maintained by the US Department of Education.
