SOC102 Current Social Problems 2013

Study Questions for Exam Three

Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question.  Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate.  Please bring a blank blue book to the exam.

One of the essay questions below will appear on your exam, plus there will be a short answer, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, true/false section based primarily on key terms from the text and your notes.

1. Discuss the issues raised concerning profiling in A Pattern of Suspicion.  Be sure to address at least issues such as:

a) The difficulties evaluating discrimination

b) The difference between disparity and discrimination

c) The balance between crime control and due process

d) The progress we have made decreasing discrimination in profiling, and the areas that still can use improvement.

2. Discuss the lessons from the documentary “Losing the War on Drugs.”  What are the various tactics used in the war and what are their limits? What is the relationship to politics? How is the war on drugs similar to prohibition?

3. Discuss the various types and amounts of harms associated with corporate crime.  Be sure to use examples from the documentary A Dangerous Business Revisited to illustrate your points.  Why are these types of crime so hard to control?  What seems to help control them?
