Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question. Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate. Please bring a blank blue book to the exam.
One of the essay questions below will appear on your exam, plus there will be a short answer, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, true/false section:
1) Discuss the ways in which the events depicted in the article “Beer and Circus” may fit the definitions and critical dimensions of white collar crime. Discuss the origins, institutionalization, and reactions to the events.
2) How is what we know about white collar crime socially constructed? Be certain to address at minimum:
a) The role of social movements relevant to white collar crime
b) The role of the media
c) The role of academics.
d) Explain the reasons for gaps in our knowledge of white collar crime
3) Use the readings, class lectures, and discussions to discuss the various costs of white collar crime. Be sure to discuss:
a) Direct costs
b) Indirect costs
