JS 401 Community Policing 2011
Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question. Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate. Please bring a blank blue book to the exam.
Two of the essay questions below will appear on your exam, and you will be expected to answer both questions.
1) Discuss how community policing might decrease workplace violence.

2) How can we use community policing to combat terrorism? Be sure to include at minimum:
a) The common elements of definitions of terrorism
b) The process of ideological development terrorist sometimes use to make terrorist acts acceptable to them.
c) Discuss the role of partnerships to prevent terrorism and give examples.
d) Consider the challenges facing community policing efforts to combat terrorism.
3) How can we use community policing to decrease violence and abuse of women and children?
a) What are the risk factors associated with domestic violence according to Hess and Miller?
b) What are the warning signs of child abuse?
c) Discuss a program designed to combat domestic violence
d) Discuss a program designed to reduce child abuse
4) How can community policing connect with the youth in the community? Discuss at minimum:
a) What do studies report are the perceptions of youth concerning police?
b) Describe three programs designed to counter youths’ perceptions of the police
c) What are at least eight early warning signs of impending youth violence?
d) Describe the personality, family, school, and social conditions associated with school shooters.
5) Discuss the role of community policing for addressing the challenges of gangs. Be sure to cover:
a) Why youth join gangs
b) Ten childhood predictors of joining and remaining in a gang
c) Five anti-gang strategies
d) Two specific programs designed to provide alternatives to gangs.
