Study Questions for Exam One (February 2)

 

Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question.  Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate.  Please bring a blank blue book to the exam.

 

One of the essay questions below will appear on your exam, and there will be a true/false, multiple-choice section.

 

1) Use examples from the video “Good Cop, Bad Cop” to illustrate:

a) The four essential elements of community policing according to Miller and Hess, 2005.

b) “Broken Windows”

c) The conflicting demands placed on community policing programs.

 

2) Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each of the three eras of policing discussed in lecture and your textbook.

 

3) What are the reasons for police discretion?  What are the downsides of police discretion?

 

4) What does it mean to say policing is a profession?  How does this relate to the “building blocks of ethics” according to Miller and Hess?
