JS 401 Community Policing 2011
Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question. Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate. Please bring a blank blue book to the exam.
Two of the essay questions below will appear on your exam, and you will be expected to answer both questions.
1) Discuss the conditions in the community that make it more likely community policing will succeed. Cover at least issues such as:
a) What is “community”?
b) What is the continuum of community?
c) What is “social capital”?
d) How can we strengthen communities?
2) Discuss the ways in which community policing programs can involve the community. Be sure to include lessons learned from Beat Meetings.
3) Compare Restorative Justice to Retributive Justice and discuss the implications of each for community policing.
4) Discuss the obstacles (for example, inertia) to implementing new programs like community policing, and explore ways to overcome these problems.
