Final Exam Study Questions

Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question.  Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate.  Please bring a blank blue book to the exam.

 

One of the essay questions below will appear on your exam, plus there will be a multiple choice, true-false/fill-in-the-blank section:

 

 

1. Discuss the approaches to punishment in the model countries.  Include at least:

a) The functions of punishment

b) The American contribution to prisons

c) The causes and consequences of prison crowding

d) Rehabilitation efforts of German prisons.

 

2. Examine the ways comparative criminology helps us understand terrorism.  Be sure to at least consider:

a) Compare and contrast the goals and methods of two historical terrorist groups and two modern terrorist groups

b) The advantages of terrorist tactics

c) The lessons of fighting terrorism exemplified in the video “Targeting Osama Bin Laden.”

d) The ways England, Japan, and Saudi Arabia have responded to their terrorist threats.

 

3. Discuss the difficulties of controlling transnational organized crime.  Be sure to:

a) Describe the structure and activities of a transnational organized crime group in detail.

b) Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of at least two different strategies for combating this type of crime.

 

4. Discuss four types of transnational or international crime the authors of your text predict will be future problems.  Explain the problems faced in controlling these crimes and what should be done to respond to these crimes.
