JS 423 Exam One Study Questions 2011

Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question.  Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate.  PLEASE BRING A NEW BLUE BOOK TO THE EXAM. Two of the questions below will appear on your exam.

 

1) Discuss the tensions between public policy and science.  Be sure to illustrate the different standards and methods for making convincing arguments.  How might some of the tensions be resolved?

 

2) Use specific policy examples from the readings and video to explore the costs, benefits, difficulties, and ways of controlling discretion in law enforcement.

 

3) Discuss the justice policy lessons we should have learned from the LA riots following the Rodney King incident.

 

4) Use your readings and lecture material to discuss the difficulties in crafting effective police policies to deal with domestic violence.

 

5) Use the insights from readings and lectures to provide a detailed discussion the limits of achieving greater crime control by approving policies that provide more money for law enforcement officers.
