JS 423 Exam Three (April 14, 2011) Study Questions
Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question. Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate. PLEASE BRING A NEW BLUE BOOK TO THE EXAM. Two of the questions below will appear on your exam.
1) Compare the concept of “moral panic” by Ted Chiricos to the events presented in “Losing the War on Drugs.”
2) Discuss the controversy surrounding the Martinson Report (1974) about whether “nothing works” in correctional rehabilitation.
3) Discuss of the impact on crime victims, the criminal justice system, and crime rates for:
a) Victim recontact programs
b) Victim compensation programs
c) Victim impact statements
4) Evaluate the evidence concerning Walker’s proposition which states: “Attempts to ban handguns, or certain kinds of guns, or bullets, are not likely to reduce serious crime.”
