JS 422: Race, Class, Gender and Justice

Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam
so it is advisable to prepare for each question.
Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers
should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class
and must incorporate specific material
from the course readings whenever appropriate.
Please bring a blank blue book and a pen to the exam.
One of the essay questions below will appear on your exam.
There will also be a true/false, multiple-choice, etc. section on the
exam.
1)
Discuss the various restrictions that hinder leaving battering relationships,
the rationalizations involved, the factors that facilitate leaving, and the ways
for the criminal justice system and community to more effectively react to
battering.
2)
Progress has been made in decreasing injustices experienced by female victims,
offenders and workers in society and the crime-processing system.
Explain why the problems occur (use theories when appropriate) the
problems that remain, and make specific recommendations to decrease these
problems for each:
a)
Female victims of domestic abuse
b)
Female offenders
c)
Female criminal justice system workers
3) Use Belknap to discuss the organizational,
structural, and cultural barriers women face attempting to integrate into
employment in prisons, policing and law.
Be sure to include the role of court decisions as barriers and enablers.
Use two theories to help explain these barriers. Discuss other ways to decrease
these barriers.
4) Use Belknap, class discussions, and “Return to
Valley State Prison” (Films on Demand) to examine issues of incarcerated
females. Include at least issues of:
a) Differences between male and female prison
experiences
b) Differences between male and female prison
resources
c) The reform movement for incarcerated women and its
relationship to gender roles
