JS 345 Criminology 2011

Study Questions for November 9th Exam

Note: You will not know in advance which questions will be selected for the exam so it is advisable to prepare for each question.  Remember the exam will be closed-notes and closed-book. Your answers should reflect the breadth of information presented in the class and must incorporate specific material from the course readings whenever appropriate.  Please bring a blank blue book to the exam.

One of the essay questions below will appear on your exam, plus there will be a short answer, fill-in-the-blank, multiple-choice, true/false section based primarily on key terms from the text and your notes.

1) Discuss the patterns associated with syndicated crime.  Be sure to discuss at least:

a) Why is syndicated crime so hard to eradicate?

b) The relationships between syndicated crime, legitimate business, and the government

c) How the case of Columbian organized crime from the video fits the patterns of syndicated crime you discussed in the above questions.

2) Discuss the costs of white collar crime, some of the common causes, and reasons why it is difficult to control it.  Use a detailed example to illustrate your points.

3) Examine the patterns associated with political crime.  Use the Watergate scandal and COINTELPRO to support your points.

4) Compare and contrast classical criminological explanations of crime with two biological explanations of crime and the explanations used before the Enlightenment.
