Commencement -
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Can I “walk” in commencement even if
I have a couple of classes left? A. Students with
six or fewer credits remaining to complete their
programs can participate in the commencement ceremony held each May if
the student is enrolled in these 6 credits during the summer
term. Participation in commencement does not constitute
graduation from LCSC; students must satisfactorily complete
their remaining credits to earn a
diploma from LCSC.
Q. When do I get my diploma?
A.

Q. When will my degree be posted to my
transcript? A. The degree is posted shortly after
the final grades for the student’s final semester are posted.
Assuming a satisfactory completion of all graduation, degree,
and major requirements, the degree information is generally
posted to the transcript within one
month of the last day of the semester. A notice will be sent to
student's LCMail account confirming graduation.
Q. How are graduation honors determined?
A. - For the
Commencement Program, walking honors are calculated at the end of the
fall semester based on a minimum of 48 LCSC credits.
Students who have not earned a minimum of 48 LCSC
credits after fall will have all transfer credits
figured into their cumulative GPA to determine walking honors.
- For the transcript/diploma, final honors are calculated after
the final term of enrollment based on a minimum of 64 LCSC
credits. Students who have not earned a minimum of 64 LCSC
credits will have all transfer credits figured into their
cumulative GPA to determine final honors.
- Associate degree seeking students who have earned a
minimum of 16 LCSC credits are eligible for Presidential Honors.
For baccalaureate degrees:
Cum laude honors:
Cum laude - GPA 3.7 or higher
Magna cum laude - GPA 3.8 or higher
Summa cum laude - GPA 3.9 or higher
For Associate degrees:
Presidential Honors - GPA 3.75 or higher
Q. Who decides if I graduate?
A. The degree is conferred by the
faculty of LCSC. It is the faculty body which determines whether or not a
student graduates. Many individuals, including advisors, division chairs,
and the registrar, evaluate students' academic records for completion of all
degree and major requirements.
Q. What if I want to earn a minor after
I graduate? A. Once a degree has been earned there
are no alterations to the record. Students interested in earning
a minor must complete the minor either before or concurrently
with the major.
Q. What if I want to repeat a course
after I graduate? A. Students may repeat any course they
wish. However, if the first attempt of the course was included
in the graduation grade point average, repeating the course will
not change the grade point average of the degree.
Q. What if I want to earn a bachelor of
arts instead of a bachelor of science? A. Students may earn a bachelor of arts
by completing a minimum of two years (16 semester credits) of the same
college-level foreign/heritage language. One year of language may be earned
through competency credit.
Q. What if I want to complete a double
major? A. LCSC does not award double majors.
Rather, students may be awarded two majors by completing all general
education core and the requirements for each major and by
applying and paying for two degrees. All graduation
requirements also must be satisfied; including an additional 16
credits beyond those required for the first degree.
Q. What if I feel that my advisor didn’t
give me good advice? A. Ultimately the student is responsible
for his or her own educational experience. The advisor may provide guidance
and assistance throughout the student’s academic program, but the student is
in charge of his or her own academic record and it is on the basis of the
student’s academic record that the student graduates. If a student feels he
or she is not receiving good advice, the student should ask to be assigned
to another advisor long before graduation day.
Students are equipped with a number of tools to assist them in their
education: the information found in the general catalog; Career
& Advising Services; learning assistance labs such as the writing
and math labs and the Learning Resource Center to mention a few.
Q. What if I graduate with more than one
degree? A. Students with more than one degree
must choose the degree under which they wish to walk. Additional
degrees will be announced.
