College History
Lewis-Clark State College was established by the Idaho State
Legislature in 1893. It was originally designated Lewiston
State Normal School, reflecting its early mission as a
teacher training institution. In the ensuing years its name
has been changed to Northern Idaho College of Education
(1947), then Lewis-Clark Normal School (1955), and finally
to Lewis-Clark State College (1971). The State Legislature
and Board of Education authorized the latest name change in
recognition of the College’s expanded role as comprehensive
4-year undergraduate institution. Lewis-Clark State College
has a proud heritage and a continuing tradition of service
to the state and the nation through its unique, three-part
mission of academic programs, professional-technical
training programs, and community college and community
support programs. LCSC has been rated consistently among
the top public comprehensive 4-year colleges in the West by
U.S. News and World Report. Situated in an attractive
residential area (Lewiston ID and Clarkston WA, with a
combined community of 50,000), LCSC’s Lewiston campus
occupies 46 acres on historic Normal Hill at the confluence
of the scenic Snake and Clearwater rivers. The beautiful
campus enjoys the mildest winters in Idaho-a climate matched
by a warm, friendly education environment.
Region-Wide Impact
Lewis-Clark State College serves citizens and communities
throughout the region with a wide array of continuing
education courses, distance education programs, workshops,
conferences, apprenticeship and workforce training programs,
and various non-credit educational programs. Last year,
LCSC provided over 250 online courses to more than 3,000
students with time or geographic constraints. LCSC's Coeur
d'Alene Center and four outreach centers in Kooskia, Lapwai,
Orofino, and Grangeville are improving the quality of life
for Idahoans while boosting local economies. The College's
outreach activities include Adult/Family Education programs,
the Center for New Directions, the Idaho Small Business
Development Center, and the Idaho Virtual Incubator
program. LCSC's Center for
Arts and History hosted over 5,700 visitors in FY 2005.
Last year, LCSC’s AmeriCorps members provided over 100,000
hours of tutoring and mentoring to at-risk students, and
they recruited over 900 volunteers to serve local
communities throughout the region.
Facilities
Lewis-Clark State College is in the midst of major new
facility construction and modernization efforts on its
Lewiston campus and at its Coeur d'Alene Center. The
ongoing Campus Facilities Master Plan will accentuate and
preserve unique elements of art and history and the region’s
rich heritage and tradition to meet the expanding
educational, social, and cultural needs of the College and
the local community. The College's new Activity Center
became operational in January 2005, and the final phase of
construction was completed in January 2006. The $15 million
Activity Center meets student needs in the areas of physical
education, wellness, and general classroom space for the
campus while supporting a full-range of community events.
Other ongoing facility projects include the construction of
two new student residence halls serving the Lewiston campus,
two new general purpose classroom additions to the Wittman
complex, and expansion of classroom and office space in
Coeur d'Alene to keep pace with LCSC's growing enrollment in
its programs throughout Northern Idaho.
