JUSTICE STUDIES 103 GENE STRAUGHAN

EXAM ONE FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE

This is a reminder that the test for Section One is coming up at the beginning of next week. Students will have a single two-hour timeframe to take the test online on Monday through Sunday (2/14-2/21). The exam will consist of forty multiple choice questions and two essay questions. It is an open-book test, but students are strongly encouraged not to refer to their course materials given the two hour time line. As indicated by the syllabus, the exam questions will come directly from the concept and essay questions of lessons one through five. Please study all thirty concept questions and all ten essay questions. Some important essay questions are:

1. What are the competing goals of the American system of criminal justice? How is a balance struck between the competing theories of crime control and due process?

2. What are the material elements for criminal liability, and how are defenses of justification and excuse used to avoid or mitigate criminal liability?

3. What different approaches are employed to measure the actual rate of crime within the United States? How accurate and reliable are these estimates for measuring criminal behavior?

4. What are the different theories developed to explain criminal behavior, and how can public policy be tailored to ameliorate the root causes of crime?

To access the exam students will go to https://warriorweb.lcsc.edu/ which takes them to the Warrior Web login page at LCSC. Then students need to log in and list their class schedule and click Justice Studies 103. At the bottom of that page the students need to access the virtual classroom link. If there are technical difficulties then please email webtct@lcsc.edu. Students will have two hours to complete the exam online at any time on Monday through Sunday (2/14-2/21). Good luck!
