from his book "Massacred for Gold: The Chinese in Hells Canyon"
and will include a slide-show presentation about the 1887
massacre of Chinese gold miners in Hells Canyon. 7:00

Burma: A Light in the Darkness.
This film by Patricia Keith and Sean Cassidy will be shown in
the Silverthorne Theatre as a fundraiser for the International
Student Scholarship Fund. International student groups
will be selling food and providing entertainment from 6:30-7:00,
at which time the film will begin. Tickets: $6 for the
public and $2 for students. |

2009 Stegner Lecture. Speaker:
Scott Russell Sanders, author of A Conservationist Manifesto.
7:30 p.m., Williams Conference Center.
In the tradition of Wallace Stegner, Scott Russell Sanders
understands conservation to entail protecting and nurturing all
of those goods, cultural as well as natural, that are vital to
human flourishing. As this year’s Stegner Lecturer, Sanders
will read from and talk about his latest book, A
Conservationist Manifesto, which envisions a shift from a
culture based on consumption to a culture based on caretaking.

variety of standard and contemporary big band music; vocalist
Kathleen Gemberling will be featured. The concert is free

LCSC Sax Quartet and LCSC Chamber
Music. 7:30 p.m., Silverthorne Theatre.
The Chamber Players will perform fine-art music, and the Sax
Quartet will perform music by Handel, Nancy Van de Vate, and a
variety of light concert music. The concert is free and
open to the public. |

United Methodist Church - 2906 Broadview Drive, Lewiston, ID
83501. 7:00 p.m. The college choir will perform a
variety of choral works by Handel, Rossini, Moses Hogan and
Daniel Bukvich. The 35-member choir is directed by Joel
Pals and accompanied by Anna Geidl. The concert is free
and open to the public. |

Public Debate -
The Speech
& Debate Team will hold a Public Debate on Thursday, December 3,
from 5:00-6:00 p.m. in MLH 100.
The team members will debate about the local economy, including
issues of employment, transportation, and taxes. They will
provide opening and closing arguments on these issues. About 20
minutes will be allocated in the middle of the program for
audience participation and opinion.

Fall 2009 Speech Contest -
Persuasive Public Speaking. 6:30-8:30 p.m. MLH 100.
You are invited to attend the Fall 2009 PERSUASIVE PUBLIC
SPEAKING COMPETITION sponsored by the LCSC Humanities Division
on Tuesday, December 8th, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in MLH
100. The seven
students selected to participate in the Persuasive Speech
Competition are from this year’s public speaking courses. Their
speeches will be 6-8 minutes in length, and will be judged on
topic relevance and purpose, organization, research, style, and
delivery. The presenter’s goal is to persuade or convince their
audience to a ‘call to action’ on various topics which may range
from global issues to passionate causes to brushing your teeth.
Successful presentations appeal to our logic and emotions and
move us into action. Come and be moved!
