The COMPASS placement assessment is the official LCSC placement tool
for students seeking admission into any professional technical program and for academic
students who have not taken the ACT or SAT within the past three years. COMPASS is a
computer-based instrument developed by ACT, that includes a variety of placement and
diagnostic modules. The three required modules for LCSC students are reading placement,
writing placement and mathematics placement.
The COMPASS placement assessment requires a fee: $15 for taking
the COMPASS placement assessment at LCSC for the first time (up to three placement
assessment modules), or $5 per assessment module for retakes. Students need to pay for
COMPASS at the Cashiers window prior to taking it.
COMPASS is being offered on campus only in the Center
for New Directions, in RCH 23. Students needing to take COMPASS must make an
appointment by stopping by the Center for New Directions or calling 792-2331.
Several units on campus are involved in helping make COMPASS
available on campus. The central contact person on campus for COMPASS is Dawn
Byers, Office of Institutional Research, dbyers@lcsc.edu,
x2065. You can find additional information about COMPASS at
http://www.lcsc.edu/ir
For instructors who may want to make use of other COMPASS
modules for instructional purposes, please be aware that there is limited amount
of time that the computer lab in the Center for New Directions is available
for COMPASS and that there is a significant per use charge for COMPASS to LCSC.
