K & G Construction

Kevin Messick of K & G Construction

Kevin and Gena Messick - Lewiston

K & G Construction, LLC, owned by Kevin and Gena Messick, was started in June 2006. The company specializes in residential and commercial contracting. Kevin has a long history in the construction industry, beginning when he was in high school. It was this background and passion for the industry that prompted Kevin to start his own business.

Kevin first came to the Idaho SBDC to enroll in QuickBooks classes. He followed up with consulting sessions with Judy Schumacher to help him review his business and ensure that he had the necessary licensing, registrations and processes in place to get his business off to the right start. He also participated in a Human Resource student project, in which the team developed an Employee Handbook for Kevin to utilize in his business.

K & G Construction’s success is largely due to starting the business on a relatively small scale and assuring procedures were followed to become a solid company poised for growth. Initially, Kevin and his father-in-law were the only employees. Today, there are four full-time employees. The company has seen sales growth of 51% and 42% in 2008 and 2009 respectively. Kevin has enough projects in the pipeline to get him through 2010 – which is an accomplishment given the current economic environment. He has been able to secure small to mid-sized jobs with ATK, private home owners, commercial businesses, and local real estate developers. Kevin takes pride in maintaining a high level of professionalism and has built a reputation for integrity, honesty and responsiveness with customers, suppliers and employees. He demands courtesy, professionalism and can-do attitudes from his staff and ensures that the workplace is safe.

Kevin has been a vocal supporter of the Region II Idaho Small Business Development Center by referring clients, employees, and colleagues for their own business assistance. Kevin says, “The Idaho Small Business Development Center is a great resource for entrepreneurs who have questions or need assistance in various business aspects. Entrepreneurs can confidently call the SBDC and get answers to their questions or be referred to the right resources for assistance. They offer good trainings on topics that are pertinent and important to small business, at a reasonable price. If you are a new entrepreneur, the SBDC can help you get started “legally” and correctly.”
