Overall Course Objectives:
The overall objective of Biology 175 is to introduce the principles and processes of biology through the study of human organism. Students will gain an understanding of how the human body functions through a detailed study of each organ system that comprises the human body. This course will give students a perspective of how the human body maintains homeostasis through the interaction of organ system functions. Current topics in health sciences, nutrition, biology and medicine will be discussed as they pertain to specific organ systems. Students will learn to think critically about the consequences of recent developments in biotechnology and medical sciences. Laboratories will introduce basic biological techniques and reinforce those principles learned in lecture.
On a more personal level, I hope that students who complete this course will appreciate how truly amazing our biology is!
B. Required Textbooks:
HUMAN BIOLOGY. 9th ED. 2005. Sylvia Mader
Laboratory for Human Biology. 9th ed., 2005. Sylvia Mader
C. Student Responsibilities:
Students are responsible for all lecture material and all assigned study questions. A list of assigned study questions is included in this syllabus. Students will be responsible for understanding the laboratory exercises and techniques. Students will be responsible for reading the assigned laboratory exercise before attending lab. Drop slips will not be signed after Nov.3, 2006.
D. Evaluation:
Lecture: There will be 4 exams covering lecture material plus a comprehensive final exam. Each exam will be worth 100 points. The lowest score of these 5 exams will be dropped. There will be NO make-up exams. There will be no exceptions made to this policy. Students who are satisfied with the scores they earned on the first 4 exams may opt to not take the comprehensive final. Final exam questions will be composed of questions from the text. The text questions are those under the heading "Testing you Knowledge of the Concepts", which can be found at the end of each chapter.
Laboratory:
There will be 4 quizzes, each worth 30 points. As in lecture, the lowest score will be dropped. Again there will be NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES. There will be 12 laboratory write-ups, each worth 10 points. The lowest 2 scores received on these write-ups will be dropped. Laboratory write-ups are due before students leave lab. Laboratory write-ups turned in late will not be accepted. Students will not be able to make-up missed laboratories. There will be a reading log assigned for each laboratory period. The reading logs will be turned in at the beginning of each laboratory period and are worth 3 points each. Ten reading logs are required. Late reading logs will not be accepted.
Laboratory bonus points: Students may earn 2 pts/laboratory period by orally answering questions on that day's laboratory exercise before leaving lab. These bonus points will be added to the score of that day’s laboratory lab write-up.
If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment to talk with me.
