Dr. J.R. Seaman, a Professor based on the Coeur d'Alene Campus, teaches the following courses:

  • History of Social Welfare (SW 320)
  • Human Behavior and the Social Environment (SW 321 and 322)
  • Social Policy (SW 340)
  • Mezzo Practice (SW 442)
  • Macro Practice (SW 443)
  • Aging (SW 492)
  • Grief and Loss (SW 492

His academic background includes a Master of Social Work from Washington University, a Master of Business Administration from City University in Seattle, a Ph.D. in both Social Policy and Political Science from the University of Illinois and a healing arts diploma from East-West College of the Healing Arts in Portland, Oregon . Academic experience includes Director of both a BSW program and MSW programs. 

Dr. Seaman has clinical experience in the fields of child protective services and mental health. His managerial experience includes both governmental and various non-profit community agencies.

Originally from Texas, he has lived and worked in various states including Texas, Illinois, Missouri, Washington, Oregon, Utah and the Province of British Columbia.  His intellectual interests include Political Advocacy, Administration, and the fields of Aging and Health Care. 

His philosophy is simple: 

  • Don’t take yourself seriously, leave that to others
  • Find something to laugh about every day
  • Make learning fun.

Each Spring semester, his SW 340 class goes to Boise for three days to meet with legislators, agency heads and other social workers to learn about and practice legislative advocacy for social justice.
