Using the Library

Access the library's databases

You can search for articles from scholarly journals, newspapers, magazines, and trade publications on a variety of topics or subject areas using the databases from our Journals, Newspapers and Indexes page.

Students, staff, faculty and guests can conduct research at the library using our databases anytime during our normal working hours using our public access computer stations or from any computer or laptop (personal or owned by LCSC) physically on campus.

In order to access the library’s databases from off campus, you’ll be prompted to enter an ID and password.  Your ID will be your first initial, middle initial and last name and your password will be your birth date (in numbers only format, for example: March 8 1987 would be entered at 030887).  If you have questions or need further assistance, please contact an Information Librarian at 208.792.2236

Access email

There are computers available on the first floor near the Information Desk as well as the Information Commons Technology Lounge that you can use to access your email.  Computer access in the Information Commons Technology Lounge requires your Warrior One card.

Check out library materials

In order to check out materials at the library, you’ll need to take the item and your LCSC Warrior One card to one of our friendly staff at the circulation desk, and they will check it out for you.  Distance students can request materials to be sent directly to their home using our online form for requesting materials or by calling 208.792.2236.

Find a book in the library

Go to the LCSC library catalog and type in the title, author or subject of the book you’re looking for.  Choose LCSC Library from the dropdown menu at the right to limit your search to only items here at LCSC.  For help, you can always call or email our Information Librarians at 208.792.2236 or refdesk@lcsc.edu.

Find materials in other libraries

The LCSC library shares materials with the U of I library, U of I Law library and the NIC Molstead library.  To search materials at all the libraries go to the LCSC library catalog. Type in the title or subject of the item. Check to make sure the Quick Limit box to the right of the search box says “none”, or use the dropdown menu to choose the name of the library you want. Click on the Search box when done. For help, please call our Information Librarians at 208.792.2236

Find a journal article

Our journal articles are available in print, online, or in both formats.  Articles available only in print can be found on the first and second floor of the library and are shelved alphabetically by the title of the journal the article is found in.  Online articles are found in our databases, which are arranged by subject on our Journals, Newspapers, Indexes page

Learn more about searching for journal articles using our online databases (link sentence to “accessing databases”)

Find materials my instructor has on reserve

Go to the library’s home page at http://www.lcsc.edu/library.  On the left hand side of the page, click “Reserves”, then choose “print reserves” to find out what materials are here in the library for you to check out.  Or, click on “e-reserves” to find out what materials you can view online from home. When using the e-reserves pages from an off-campus computer, you’ll need to login to the page using your first initial, middle initial and last name as your login ID and your birth date in six digit format (March 8 1987 would be entered at 030887) as your password.  For questions about using the e-reserve system, please call our circulation department at 208.792.2396

Find what items the library has on a particular subject

You can go to our easy to use Research Tools pages.  Scroll through the list to find the subject you’re looking for.  Click on the subject name to view different types of resources about that particular topic, from online reference books to databases and websites.

Get a library card

Your LCSC Warrior One card is also your library card. If you are an LCSC student, staff, or faculty member and you don’t have an LCSC Warrior One card go to the SUB Information Desk to get yours.  If you are not an LCSC student, you can use your local library’s VALNet library card to check out items from our library, as long as your account is clear of any fines or fees.

Distance students can get an LCSC Warrior One card by filling out our online registration form.

Renew materials

You can now renew your library materials online!  Just go to our library catalog and click on the grey “Patron” button at the top of the screen.  LCSC students, faculty and staff can enter the barcode on the back of their Warrior One cards, and guests can enter the card number from their public library ValNet card.  Then type in your last name and click login.  Check the box next to the item you’d like to renew, and click the “Renew Items” button at the bottom of the screen.

If you have any questions about the process or need troubleshooting information, please call the Library at 208.792.2396.

Request an item from a different library

Before you request an item, make sure you’re set up with a library account. For more information about setting up a library account contact the Circulation Desk at 208.792.2396. To request an item you can do the following:

1. Go to the LCSC library and fill out an Interlibrary loan form (located at the Circulation and Information Desks).
2.  Fill out a materials request form online, or from the library’s website, click on “Forms for Requesting Materials”
3.  Request materials directly from our library catalog (link to request an item from a different library)

Required Course Textbooks and Interlibrary Loan

Though we understand that textbook prices are especially high, the LCSC Library is unable to borrow
required class textbooks via Interlibrary Loan.  Why?

●   Few libraries purchase textbooks.  Textbook collections are usually reserved for campus-use
only and are not loaned to other libraries.

●   You would only get to keep a textbook borrowed through Interlibrary Loan for 2-3 weeks.

Loan due dates are set by the lending library, not by the LCSC Library.

Failure to return items when due can lead to:

●  You would be charged by the lending library for the full cost of the book PLUS a processing fee.

●  Your access to Interlibrary Loan and all LCSC Library privileges would be suspended until the item is
returned and/or any fees charged by the lending library are paid.

●  Your grades, class registration, transcripts, and graduation would be blocked until the item is returned
and/or any fees charged by the lending library are paid.

Study Rooms

The library has 6 study rooms: 2 on the first floor and 4 on the second floor that are available students on a first come first serve basis, though priority is given to groups of two or more.  You can also get comfortable and work at one of the many tables and seating areas on both the first and second floor.

Typing papers

There are computers on the first floor near the Information Desk as well as the Information Commons Technology Lounge with Microsoft Office products that you can use to type up your papers or other homework assignments.

Using cell phones in the library

Cell phone usage is allowed on the first floor of the library and in the building lobby.
