What we loan |
Can I check out
government documents?
No.
Government Documents must be used in the Library. Many government publications
are available online, however, and can be accessed via the
Library Home Page.
For further information,
please ask at the Information Desk 208-792-2236.
|
Can I check out journals or magazines?
No.
Journals and other periodicals must be used in the Library. If you are a
student of LCSC, you may have access to many of our electronic database
periodicals resources from home. Please stop by the Information Desk for further
information.
|
Can I check out CDs?
Yes. Up to five CDs
may be checked out for 14 days at a time. We also have CD
players available for use in the library.
Community patrons may check
out a total of three items for 14 days. Items may be renewed one
time.
|
Can I check out videos and
DVDs?
Yes. Up to
five videos or DVDs may be checked out for 14 days at a time. If the video or DVD you want to borrow is not on the
shelf, you may place a hold on it, and we will contact you when it is
returned.
Community patrons may check
out a total of three items for 14 days. Items may be renewed one
time.
|
How many books can I check out at a time?
There is a limit
of 20 for books in the general collection, but there is a limit of three for
Pacific Northwest books and five for video, CDs, and DVDs. If you are an LCSC student and need more
than twenty books from the general collection for a research project, in
many cases this limit can be extended, provided you have no overdues or
fines on your record.
Community patrons may check
out a total of three items for 14 days. Items may be renewed one
time.
|
|
Can I get an article from
an old issue of the Lewiston Morning Tribune?
The Library has access to the online
edition of the Lewiston Morning Tribune. Their online archive has
articles going back to 1989. You may access this online archive by
coming to
the Library. If you have a paper subscription to the Lewiston
Morning Tribune, you may call them at 208-743-9411 to set up your own
online subscription (at no additional cost).
For articles from 1893 to the present, you may come to the Library and use the
Lewiston Morning Tribune in microfilm format. The charge
for printing from the microfilm reader/printers is 10 cents per page.
The machine takes dimes, only.

|
How to Borrow Material |
How do I get a library card?
If you are a student, staff, or faculty member of LCSC, your campus ID
card functions as your library card.
Community patrons must have a current VALNet (Valley
Automated Library Network) library card issued by a local VALNet
library.
|
Where do I go to check out materials?
Bring items you
would like to check out to the Circulation Desk on the first floor of
the library. You must
have your library card with you in order to check out items.
|
How long may I have an item?
The loan period depends on the item. Most books from the
collection can be checked out for 28 days. CDs, videos, and DVDs can be
checked out for 14 days. Reserve items vary, depending on the instructor. Some
items may be renewed.
|
|
Someone else has borrowed the book I need to use. How can I get
it?
If a book (or other item) is checked out, you can place a hold on it. When the
item has been returned, we will hold it for you
and call you to let you know it is available. The Reference
Librarians can show you how to place a hold on an item in the catalog.
(Outreach students should continue to send their requests on the
"Interlibrary Loan Requests" form, rather
than placing holds on the items in the catalog.)
|
Why did the library worker say he would "charge" a book to me?
Will it cost money?
That is just library jargon meaning that a book is being "checked out."
It does not cost you anything to check out an item (unless of course you do not return it on time!).
|
Where do I go to pick up items that are on Reserve?
The Reserve Desk is located on the right (East) end of the Circulation Desk.
Please go there to ask for Reserve items.
|
Where can I find GED books?
GED books are kept on Reserve. Please ask for the one you need at
the Circulation Desk.
|
|
Items You Already Borrowed |
How can I renew material?
There are several ways to renew items. The easiest is to call
208-792-2396, with your library card in hand, and renew over the phone.
Or come to the Circulation Desk with your library card. Make sure
that you renew your books before or on the due date. If your books
are overdue or if someone else has placed a hold on them, they may not
be renewed. There is a limit of one
renewal per item.
|
|
I got a notice that an item I've borrowed has been recalled. What
does that mean?
Another patron has identified the item in the catalog
and would like to borrow it. The recall notice establishes a
new due date, usually a week from the date of the recall notice.
The item will be overdue eight days after the recall notice. Items
that have been recalled may not be renewed. Fines on
recalled items are $2 a day, with a maximum of $20. ALL PATRONS
(students, faculty, staff, and community members) are subject to recall
fines!
|
Where do I return items?
You may return items inside the Library at the Circulation Desk.
There are also two book drops outside the Library that are checked
daily. One book drop is in the Library parking lot, and the other
is to the right of the double doors that lead into the building.
|
How can I find out what library materials I have borrowed?
Bring your library card to the Circulation Desk, and a list can be
printed for you.
|
|
Lost/Overdue Items |
Oops, I lost a book. What should I do, and how much will it
cost?
If a book is lost, you should report it to the Circulation Desk,
208-792-2396. The replacement cost of each item is $80, to cover
the cost of replacing the item, including the staff costs. If
necessary, a payment plan can be developed. Please contact the Circulation
Desk and speak with the Circulation Supervisor to make arrangements.
|
Oops, my book is overdue. What should I do and how much will it
cost?
When you check out a book from LCSC, the due date is marked in the back
cover. If you discover that an item is overdue, return it
immediately so that it will not continue accruing fines. Our fines on videos and games are $1.00 per day with
a maximum fine of $25.00 per item. On Reserve items, fines are 25
cents per hour, and on all other items 25 cents per day with a maximum
fine of $10.00 per item.
|
What do I do if I know I cannot return my materials on time?
Call the Library before or on the due date and renew them. If the
items cannot be renewed, you will need to speak to the Circulation
Supervisor to make arrangements, 208-792-2830. The only
exception to this rule is Reserve items. Reserve items must be
returned to the LCSC Library Circulation Desk.
|
How will the Library get in touch with me if I have overdue
materials?
An overdue notice will be mailed to you to inform you if items are
overdue or being recalled. Overdue notices are mailed out in time
for you to return the item before accruing fines. However, you are
responsible for knowing when your items are due and for returning them
on time. Overdue notices are a service we provide, but not
receiving an overdue notice does not excuse a fine.
|
Is there a foolproof way to keep out of trouble with fines?
Return your items on time, every time. No fines, no trouble.
|
I just received an overdue notice for a book I know I returned.
Who should I talk to?
If you have received an overdue notice, and you think you have returned
the item, call the Circulation Desk, 208-792-2396. Ask to have the
shelves checked. If the book is on the shelf, we will check it in
and waive any fine. |
