Books

 

LCSC Library Catalog - provides information about the materials owned by the LCSC Library and other North Idaho Academic Libraries, including North Idaho College and the University of Idaho.  Also has a link to WIN Libraries, so you can search Gonzaga, Whitworth, and VALNet Libraries. 

Virtual Reference Library - Search a collection on online reference books from Gale, a respected publisher of subject-focused encyclopedias and dictionaries.

For information on culture, try searching for your country with subject terms like "National Characteristics" or "Manners and customs" or "Culture" (for example, Hungary AND national characteristics).

Credo Reference - Search a collection of up to 100 online dictionaries and subject encyclopedias.  Or click on "Find a Book," and search within only one title, such as Cambridge Guide to Theatre or Bloomsbury Guide to Art.

WorldCat - A catalog of items held at libraries throughout the world.  Many of these materials can be borrowed through inter-library loan.  This database also provides more in-depth cataloguing to materials owned by LCSC.

UNdata -- Combines major UN databases and those of several international organizations into a single internet environment. The innovative design allows users to access a large number of UN databases either by browsing the data series or through a keyword search.  Provided by the United Nations Statistics Division.

 

The World Bank -  Provides free and open access to a comprehensive set of data about development in countries around the globe, together with other datasets cited in the data catalog.

BusinessDictionary.com - A free online dictionary of business terms.  Provided by WebFinance, Inc.

 

Doing Business - Provides objective measures of business regulations and their enforcement across 181 economies and selected cities at the subnational and regional level.  A website of the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank Group.

 

Export.gov - Brings together resources from across the U.S. Government to assist American businesses in planning their international sales strategies and succeed in today’s global marketplace.  Provided by the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

 

FSI Language Courses - Language training courses provided by the Foreign Service Institute (U.S. government).  They provide textbooks and some digitized audio files.

FedFlix - The best movies of the United States Government, from training films to history, from our national parks to the U.S. Fire Academy and the Postal Inspectors, all of these fine flix are available for reuse without any restrictions whatsoever. the Capitol BuildingFederal Digital System - Searchable database of Web pages, with an emphasis on the Legislative Branch of the Federal Government, including Congressional bills and hearings.  Provided by the Government Printing Office.

Research Paper Help:

Online Writing Lab - A service of the Humanities Division at LCSC, this center provides one-on-one advice from other students on improving your papers before turning them in.

Online Resources for Writers - Links to useful information from colleges and universities, covering all phases of writing academic essays.  Provided by the Amherst Writing Center.

Assignment Calculator - Based on the start date and due date for your assignment, this calculator will map out benchmarks for completing tasks leading up to the final paper.  It also provides links to other pages with tips on understanding your assignment, focusing your topic, etc.  It was developed by the library at the University of Minnesota, so a few of its linked resources are not available to you.  But we have many similar resources available to you on this campus.

Thesaurus.com - Find synonyms for your search terms.  An Ask.com service.

Wikipedia : Researching with Wikipedia - A page on the Wikipedia site that describes the strengths and weaknesses of Wikipedia as a source of information.  It includes this statement:  "In all academic institutions, Wikipedia, along with most encyclopedias, is unacceptable as a major source for a research paper."
