CINAHL - (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature).  Provides citations to over 1600 nursing and allied health journals, dating back to 1982.   

Health Reference Center Academic (A Thomson Gale database) -  Provides articles from 750 sources, plus citations from an additional 2200 journals in medicine, health, nursing and allied health areas.

Health & Wellness Resource Center (A Thomson Gale database) - General, less academic health information than found in Health Reference Center Academic.  It includes full-text of articles, newletters, and pamphlets, as well as reference works such as The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine.

PubMed  - Covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.  Provides access to 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE (with links to participating on-line journals), and other related databases.  Provided by the National Library of Medicine, part of the Federal Government's National Institutes of Health.

Other Science Sources:

Google Scholar - A new product from Google that provides citations to scholarly journals.

BasicBIOSIS - Covers life sciences, environmental sciences, and other related disciplines.  Provides citations to 350 core life sciences journals, as well as meeting papers, reviews, and newspapers.

PsycINFO - Contains more than 1.8 million citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations and technical reports, all in the field of psychology. Journal coverage, which dates back to the 1800s, includes international material selected from more than 1,700 periodicals in over 30 languages.

SCIRUS - A comprehensive science-specific search engine available on the Internet. Driven by the latest search engine technology, it enables scientists, students and anyone searching for scientific information to chart and pinpoint data, locate university sites and find reports and articles quickly and easily. It was launched by Elsevier Science, the leading international publisher of scientific information.

Books and other Monographs

LCSC Library Catalog - provides information about the materials owned by the LCSC Library and other North Idaho Academic Libraries, including North Idaho College and the University of Idaho.  Also has a link to WIN Libraries, so you can search Gonzaga, Whitworth, and VALNet Libraries.

WorldCat - A catalog of items held at libraries throughout the world.  Many of these materials can be borrowed through inter-library loan.

Google Books - Info from their Website:  "Just do a search on Google Book Search or on Google.com. When we find a book whose content contains a match for your search terms, we'll link to it in your search results. Click a book title and you'll see, like a card catalog entry, some basic information about the book. You may also see a few snippets of text from the book showing your search term in context. If the publisher or author has given us permission through our Partner Program then you'll see a few full pages from the book and if the book is out of copyright, you'll be able to page through the entire book."  Click on the "About This Book" link and look for a link called "Find This Book in a Library" to locate the nearest library holdings.

For Consumers:

Medline Plus - Consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health.

Healthtouch Online - Consumer health information, including information on vitamins, supplements, and natural medicine.

CHID (Combined Health Information Database) – A service of the National Institutes of Health that provides citations and abstracts of more than 101,000 health-related materials that have appeared in magazines, journals, newspapers, brochures, book chapters, and videotapes.  Does not provide full-text or information about local libraries owning the item.  (LCSC students can check to see if items are available among the electronic and paper resources provided by the Library.)

Medicare - The Official U.S. Government Site for People with Medicare.  Includes a database of Medicare reviews of nursing homes. 

USA.gov - A search engine for government Web pages, with an emphasis on the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.  Includes information from the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and the Centers for Disease Control.

GPO Access - Searchable database of Web pages, with an emphasis on the Legislative Branch of the Federal Government.   Includes transcripts of testimonies by experts in Congressional hearings.  Provided by the Government Printing Office.

Medical Week - A selection of health-related newsletters,  published by an independent company. Board members include academic surgeons at leading U.S. medical schools and journalists who ran major worldwide news-gathering organizations.  (Announcements require no subscription.)

HealthWeb - A categorized collection of Web sites, selected by medical librarians.

Health on the Net - Principles for high-quality healthcare Web sites from Health on the Net Foundation, Switzerland.

American Association of Critical Care Nurses - Provides standards for critical care practice, as well as information on certification, education, and research.  Access to many parts of the Website is restricted to members of the Association.

American Pain Society - Has links to some guidelines on pain management that can be purchased from their Online Store.

Association of Women's Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing - A website for members of this association.  They also provide limited information for non-members.

Gerontological Nursing Interventions Research Center, University of Iowa - Click on the Iowa Index of Geriatric Tools to get links to information on gerontological nursing.

Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations – Access to accreditation information regarding compiled data and specific ratings of healthcare organizations.  Explains National Patient Safety goals.

LeapFrog Group -  The Leapfrog Group works with medical experts throughout the U.S. to identify problems and propose solutions that it believes will improve hospital systems that could break down and harm patients. Representing approximately 34 million health care consumers in all 50 states, Leapfrog provides important information and solutions for consumers and health care providers.
