Evidence-Based Medicine DatabasesCochrane Library - A collection of databases that provide literature reviews on various treatments for diseases and conditions. Access to the Cochrane Library may be purchased from various vendors.
Cochrane Library Abstracts - A free collection of abstracts from the Cochrane Library.
Clinical Trials (Cancer) - Information on clinical trials from the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health.
Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) - A database of quality assessed reviews, provided by the University of York, United Kingdom.
Evidence-Based Practice Center Evidence Reports - Evidence-based guidance developed by the Evidence-Based Practice Centers of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Joanna Briggs Institute - Provides evidence-based guidelines focused on nursing care. Many of the Best Practice Information Sheets are free. The Systematic Review Database requires a subscription password.
Health Services Research and Development, Veterans Administration - Links to findings from studies of ways to improve health service to veterans.
Locally Created Critically Appraised Topics (CATs) - From the HealthWeb site, a collection of Web links maintained by medical librarians.
National Guideline Clearinghouse - A comprehensive database of evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and related documents produced by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) , in partnership with the American Medical Association (AMA) and the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP).
Evidence-Based Medicine Tutorials - From the Lamar Soutter Library, University of Massachusetts Medical School. Learn how to define a clinical question, translate an information need into a searchable question, select the type of study to answer your question, and do a literature search.
Bibliographic Citations (leading to published reports & studies)
CINAHL - (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature). Provides citations to over 1600 nursing and allied health journals, dating back to 1982.
CINAHL with Full-Text - A database trial. We don't yet have a contract for this database, but the company is allowing us to try it out. Please send comments on this database to Lynne Bidwell at LBidwell@lcsc.edu.
Health Reference Center Academic (A Thomson Gale database) - Provides articles from 750 sources, plus citations from an additional 2200 journals in medicine, health, nursing and allied health areas.

Health & Wellness Resource Center (A Thomson Gale database) - General, less academic health information than found in Health Reference Center Academic. It includes full-text of articles, newletters, and pamphlets, as well as reference works such as The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine.
PubMed - Covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences. Provides access to 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE (with links to participating on-line journals), and other related databases. Provided by the National Library of Medicine, part of the Federal Government's National Institutes of Health.
PNAS Online - Proceedings of the National Academy of Science of the USA Online. Covers many areas of science, not just nursing and medicine. Includes the full text plus the figures, tables, equations, and references of articles in PNAS dating back through 1996.
Online access available through LCSC campus network only.Academic OneFile - a general journal index covering many disciplines, not just Nursing. Contains full-text of some articles.

Google Scholar - A new product from Google that provides citations to scholarly journals.
BasicBIOSIS - Covers life sciences, environmental sciences, and other related disciplines. Provides citations to 350 core life sciences journals, as well as meeting papers, reviews, and newspapers.
PsycINFO - Contains more than 1.8 million citations and summaries of journal articles, book chapters, books, dissertations and technical reports, all in the field of psychology. Journal coverage, which dates back to the 1800s, includes international material selected from more than 1,700 periodicals in over 30 languages.
SCIRUS - A comprehensive science-specific search engine available on the Internet. Driven by the latest search engine technology, it enables scientists, students and anyone searching for scientific information to chart and pinpoint data, locate university sites and find reports and articles quickly and easily. It was launched by Elsevier Science, the leading international publisher of scientific information.

LCSC Library Catalog - provides information about the materials owned by the LCSC Library and other North Idaho Academic Libraries, including North Idaho College and the University of Idaho. Also has a link to WIN Libraries, so you can search Gonzaga, Whitworth, and VALNet Libraries.
Virtual Reference Library - Search a collection on online reference books from Gale, a respected publisher of subject-focused encyclopedias and dictionaries.

WorldCat - A catalog of items held at libraries throughout the world. Many of these materials can be borrowed through inter-library loan.
Google Books - Info from their Website: "Just do a search on Google Book Search or on Google.com. When we find a book whose content contains a match for your search terms, we'll link to it in your search results. Click a book title and you'll see, like a card catalog entry, some basic information about the book. You may also see a few snippets of text from the book showing your search term in context. If the publisher or author has given us permission through our Partner Program then you'll see a few full pages from the book and if the book is out of copyright, you'll be able to page through the entire book." CHID (Combined Health Information Database) – A service of the National Institutes of Health that provides citations and abstracts of more than 101,000 health-related materials that have appeared in magazines, journals, newspapers, brochures, book chapters, and videotapes. Does not provide full-text or information about local libraries owning the item. (LCSC students can check to see if items are available among the electronic and paper resources provided by the Library.)
Healthtouch Online - Consumer health information, including information on vitamins, supplements, and natural medicine.
Medline Plus - Consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health.
Medical Week - A selection of health-related newsletters, published by an independent company. Board members include academic surgeons at leading U.S. medical schools and journalists who ran major worldwide news-gathering organizations. (Announcements require no subscription.)
MMWR surveillance summaries - Various information on mortality by the CDC.

Acronym Search - Provides definitions of acronyms, such as AAOHN (American Association of Occupational Health Nurses).
American Association of Critical Care Nurses - Provides standards for critical care practice, as well as information on certification, education, and research. Access to many parts of the Website is restricted to members of the Association.
American Pain Society - Has links to some guidelines on pain management that can be purchased from their Online Store.
Association of Women's Health, Obstetrics and Neonatal Nursing - A website for members of this association. They also provide limited information for non-members.
Gerontological Nursing Interventions Research Center, University of Iowa - Click on the Iowa Index of Geriatric Tools to get links to information on gerontological nursing.
Health on the Net - Principles for high-quality healthcare Web sites from Health on the Net Foundation, Switzerland.
HealthWeb - A categorized collection of Web sites, selected by medical librarians.
Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations – Access to accreditation information regarding compiled data and specific ratings of healthcare organizations. Explains National Patient Safety goals.
Kootenai Medical Center Library (for Coeur d'Alene area students). You can use their databases on-site by visiting their library. To borrow books, please use Inter-Library Loan from LCSC.
LeapFrog Group - The Leapfrog Group works with medical experts throughout the U.S. to identify problems and propose solutions that it believes will improve hospital systems that could break down and harm patients. Representing approximately 34 million health care consumers in all 50 states, Leapfrog provides important information and solutions for consumers and health care providers.
Government:
Science.gov - A gateway to authoritative selected science information provided by U.S. Government agencies, including research and development results.
USA.gov - A search engine for government Web pages, with an emphasis on the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. Another good source of statistics.
Medicare - The Official U.S. Government Site for People with Medicare. Includes a database of Medicare reviews of nursing homes.
GPO Access - Searchable database of Web pages, with an emphasis on the Legislative Branch of the Federal Government. Provided by the Government Printing Office.
Thomas - An easy-to-search source for legislative information, provided by the Library of Congress.
I-Docs - An online collection of paper and digital resources selectively chosen from published Idaho Government Documents.
Idaho state fact sheet - facts that include but are not limited to population, income, education, and employment.
Standardized Tests:
Test Prep Review -- Free access to sample questions from many standardized tests, such as graduate school entrance exams and certification exams.
Citations:
Knight Cite -- An automatic generator of citations in either MLA, APA, or Chicago style. Registering for the service allows you to save citations to generate a bibliography. A free service provided by the Hekman Library at Calvin College.
APA Citation Style - examples of citations in APA Format for your list of References.
