Health:

CINAHL with Full-Text - Most comprehensive source of full text for nursing & allied health journals, providing full text for more than 580 journals,  with full-text coverage dating back to 1981.

ProQuest Health and Medical Complete - Designed to serve a wide range of people who need health information -- from hospital administrators to medical professionals to consumers. The database provides coverage from leading health journals and essential medical journals in key medical specialties.  Funding-short.gif: Funded By LiLI Graphic

PubMed  - Covers the fields of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, and the preclinical sciences.  Provides access to 9 million citations in MEDLINE and Pre-MEDLINE (with links to participating on-line journals), and other related databases.  Provided by the National Library of Medicine, part of the Federal Government's National Institutes of Health.

ProQuest Family Health - Full-text information covering numerous aspects of family health from sports injuries to women's health, from food and nutrition to midwifery, from eye care to dentistry.  Funding-short.gif: Funded By LiLI Graphic

Pharmaceutical News Index - Pharmacological news, research, and regulatory information. Covers the most important specialized publications in the pharmaceutical, health care, biotechnology, and medical device industries.  Funding-short.gif: Funded By LiLI Graphic

 

Other Sciences:

BioOne - electronic journals in the biological, ecological and environmental sciences. Articles in BioOne are fulltext, and include all illustrations and links from the original printed articles. BioOne journals are published by scholarly societies, museums and other organizations, many of which are members of the American Institute for Biological Sciences.

ProQuest Science Journals - Full text and images for the leading periodicals in science and technology. Subject coverage includes computers, engineering, physics, telecommunications, and transportation.   Funding-short.gif: Funded By LiLI Graphic

PNAS Online  - Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA Online.  Includes the full text plus the figures, tables, equations, and references of articles in PNAS dating back through 1996.
Online access available through LCSC campus network only.

Public Library of Science - A new publishing venture by scientists.  PLoS is a nonprofit organization of scientists and physicians committed to making the world's scientific and medical literature a freely available public resource.   Most of their articles are available through PubMed Central in full-text.

SCIRUS - A comprehensive science-specific search engine available on the Internet. Driven by the latest search engine technology, it enables scientists, students and anyone searching for scientific information to chart and pinpoint data, locate university sites and find reports and articles quickly and easily. It was launched by Elsevier Science, the leading international publisher of scientific information.

Google Scholar - A new product from Google that provides citations to scholarly journals.

 

General Journal Databases:

ProQuest Central - Includes articles from over 11,000 magazines and journals.  Many, but not all, provide the full-text of articles.  Over 160 subjects areas are covered extensively in this product including business and economics, health and medical, news and world affairs, technology, and social sciences.  Funding-short.gif: Funded By LiLI Graphic

Research Library - A smaller collection of periodicals than ProQuest Central.  Covers a broad range of subjects including arts, business, children, education, general interest, health, humanities, international, law, military, multicultural, psychology, sciences, social sciences, and women's interests.  Funding-short.gif: Funded By LiLI Graphic

ProQuest National Newspapers Premier - Includes a balance of national and regional newspapers chosen for their journalistic excellence and regional representation. All titles are available in full text. Papers include national titles such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post along with a selection of titles from across the U.S. such as the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Denver Post, The Sacramento Bee plus other important U.S. papers.  Funding-short.gif: Funded By LiLI Graphic

LCSC Library Catalog - provides information about the materials owned by the LCSC Library and other North Idaho Academic Libraries, including North Idaho College and the University of Idaho.  Also has a link to WIN Libraries, so you can search Gonzaga, Whitworth, and VALNet Libraries.

            Working Spanish for Medical Professionals (ebook)

 

Virtual Reference Library - Search a collection on online reference books from Gale, a respected publisher of subject-focused encyclopedias and dictionaries.

WorldCat - A catalog of items held at libraries throughout the world.  Many of these materials can be borrowed through inter-library loan.

Google Books - Info from their Website:  "Just do a search on Google Book Search or on Google.com. When we find a book whose content contains a match for your search terms, we'll link to it in your search results. Click a book title and you'll see, like a card catalog entry, some basic information about the book. You may also see a few snippets of text from the book showing your search term in context. If the publisher or author has given us permission through our Partner Program then you'll see a few full pages from the book and if the book is out of copyright, you'll be able to page through the entire book."  Click on the "About This Book" link and look for a link called "Find This Book in a Library" to locate the nearest library holdings.

For Consumers:

American Hospital Directory - A subscription service that provides limited hospital directory and statistical information to non-subscribers.

Medline Plus - Consumer health information from the National Institutes of Health.

USA.gov - A search engine for government Web pages, with an emphasis on the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.  Includes information from the National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and the Centers for Disease Control.

 

For Healthcare Professionals and Consumers:

Acronym Search - Provides definitions of acronyms, such as AAOHN (American Association of Occupational Health Nurses)

 

Government:

the White HouseUSA.gov - A search engine for government Web pages, with an emphasis on the Executive Branch of the Federal Government.  Another good source of statistics.

Data.gov - Information and access to data generated and help by the Federal Government.

Occupational Outlook Handbook - Information on careers from the Department of Labor.

 

the Capitol BuildingFederal Digital System - Searchable database of Web pages, with an emphasis on the Legislative Branch of the Federal Government, including Congressional bills and hearings.  Provided by the Government Printing Office. 

 

Thomas - An easy-to-search source for legislative information, provided by the Library of Congress.

    I-Docs - An online collection of paper and digital resources selectively chosen from published Idaho Government Documents.

APA Formatting and Style Guide - Guidance provided by Purdue University Online Writing Lab.

APA Citation Style - examples of citations in APA Format for your list of References.

 

MLA Formatting and Style Guide - Guidance provided by Purdue University Online Writing Lab.

MLA Citation Style - Guidance provided by the University of Illinois Writers' Workshop.

 

Knight Cite -- An automatic generator of citations in either MLA, APA, or Chicago style.  Registering for the service allows you to save citations to generate a bibliography.  A free service provided by the Hekman Library at Calvin College.

Son of Citation Machine -- An "interactive Web tool designed to assist high school, college, and university students, their teachers, and independent researchers in their effort to respect other people's intellectual properties" (from the Website).

Test Prep Review -- Free access to sample questions from many standardized tests, such as graduate school entrance exams and certification exams.

 

 

Research Paper Help:

Online Writing Lab - A service of the Humanities Division at LCSC, this center provides one-on-one advice from other students on improving your papers before turning them in.

Online Resources for Writers - Links to useful information from colleges and universities, covering all phases of writing academic essays.  Provided by the Amherst Writing Center.

Idea Generator - organized by general subject areas.  A service of the Library at Old Dominion University.   You can use these simple keywords to help you generate ideas of your own for focused research paper topics.

Assignment Calculator - Based on the start date and due date for your assignment, this calculator will map out benchmarks for completing tasks leading up to the final paper.  It also provides links to other pages with tips on understanding your assignment, focusing your topic, etc.  It was developed by the library at the University of Minnesota, so a few of its linked resources are not available to you.  But we have many similar resources available to you on this campus.

Thesaurus.com - Find synonyms for your search terms.  An Ask.com service.

Wikipedia : Researching with Wikipedia - A page on the Wikipedia site that describes the strengths and weaknesses of Wikipedia as a source of information.  It includes this statement:  "In all academic institutions, Wikipedia, along with most encyclopedias, is unacceptable as a major source for a research paper."
