Getting Started

Like learning a new citation style, learning to paraphrase takes a little time and practice.

  • You must be careful to keep the original meaning of the text without using the same words.

  • If you decide to use a phrase from the text, be sure to put quotation marks around it, to show that it is another author's choice of words, not yours.

  • Even though you have paraphrased (that is, used different words), you should still cite your source to show that you are using someone else's ideas.

And be patient with yourself.  You will get the hang of it, but not without some effort!
