In other words, submitting someone else's ideas or phrases as your own is plagiarism (pronounced "PLAY - jer - ism").

It applies to complete works or to small parts of works.

As you produce papers in college, you are operating in the World of Ideas.  In this world, plagiarism is a kind of theft -- stealing ideas, instead of jewels or money or car stereos.  Because it represents stealing, it is morally wrong and often carries legal penalties.
