Dissertations

Graduate students usually do original research and write up the results before they can receive a PhD.  Their report is called a dissertation.

These can be hard to get because the library at the university where the graduate student did the work usually keeps the only library copy in existence, and they usually won't loan a unique item.  A company in the United States provides microfiche copies of most dissertations, but it costs money to get a copy from the microfiche.  If you find a citation for a dissertation that you would like to read, ask the Reference Librarian for advice on how to get it.

You can recognize a citation for a dissertation by:

  • The reference to a university and a PhD, and

  • The lack of any other publication information.
