Conference Proceedings

Scholars and researchers frequently get together to present their latest research findings.  The meeting is usually called a conference or a symposium.

Scholars submit papers, in advance, and are selected to present their papers to their colleagues at the meeting.  These papers are often collected and published after the meeting in a work called Proceedings.

These papers can be very useful for your own research on a topic, because they show the latest research in the subject.

Sometimes the Proceedings are published in a scholarly journal; sometimes they are published in a separate work.

Here is a citation for the introduction to a set of Proceedings:

You can tell that the citation refers to Proceedings because

  • It lists the name of the meeting and its date and place.

  • You will find citations for complete sets of proceedings or for individual papers within the proceedings.  Both kinds of citations will refer to the meeting where the paper was presented.
