Database Thesaurus

The thesaurus provides the list of acceptable subject terms for the database.

Most premium databases will have a link on the search page to allow you to search its subject headings.  Sometimes the link says "thesaurus;" sometimes they just call it "headings" or "subject headings."  It is the same thing.

Each database will have its own thesaurus of acceptable subject headings.

The thesaurus for PubMed is called MeSH (Medical Subject Headings).  It has been developed and updated by the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland.

CINAHL uses a subset of terms from MeSH that have been supplemented with more specific nursing-related terms from other nursing-related subject lists (such as the Iowa Nursing Interventions Classification).
