The
Legal Secretary program at Lewis-Clark State College provides an
intensive 2-years of skill training, combined with general education
courses, to fully prepare its students for a challenging legal
career.
Upon completion of the program, students will have gained an
understanding of basic substantive and procedural law, proper
document formatting, legal terminology, legal procedures, legal
citations, extensive computer knowledge, and the necessary critical
thinking, communication, and professional skills demanded by
employers in the legal field.
As a Legal Secretary, you are a legal professional and a valued
member of the legal team.
What do Legal
Secretaries do?
Legal Secretaries perform administrative duties
related to the law. Some specialize in
particular types of law such as family law, corporate law, or civil
litigation. They prepare correspondence and legal papers, help
prepare trial notebooks, and assist in preparing the case for
trial. In addition, Legal Secretaries perform many secretarial
duties, such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, talking
with and interviewing clients, and maintaining the office calendar.

Where
do Legal Secretaries work?
Jobs are available in a variety of legal environments. One can
find LCSC graduates in private law firms, public firms, such as the
prosecuting attorney's office and the public defender's office, the
courthouse, corporate legal offices, or legal aide, to name just a
few.
What is the job outlook?
According to the
2000-01 edition of the Occupational Outlook Handbook, there will be
rapid growth in the legal services industry through 2008. The
Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates growth of about 24% through
the year 2005 in the legal secretarial field
