LEWISTON, Idaho – John Bailie no-hit Indiana Tech for 5 2/3 innings before settling for a four-hitter as he pitched Warner Southern, Fla., to a 6-1 win over Indiana Tech in a loser-out game at the 45th annual NAIA Avista Baseball World Series Monday at Harris Field.The win sends the Royals (53-13) into another loser-out game Tuesday. Indiana Tech finished its season with a 47-24 record, including an 0-2 mark in the World Series. Indiana Tech lost its first game to host Lewis-Clark State 5-4 Saturday after drawing an opening round bye.
Bailie didn’t walk a batter and struck out eight in earning his eighth win against five losses. He retired the first 14 batters he faced before Nick Roberts reached on a throwing error with two out in the fifth. Scott Shelby broke up the no-hitter with a two-out double in the sixth.
The Warriors scored their only run in the seventh on a lead-off home run by Roberts, his eighth of the season and second of the tournament. Roberts also doubled in the ninth, but was left stranded at second.
Warner Southern got on the board in the first on a RBI double by Matt Barnett, then scored three in the fourth. Dusty Barber drove in one of the runs with a single and then scored on a two-run home run by leadoff batter Scott Hilinski, his 14th of the season.
The Royals added insurance runs in the fifth on a sacrifice bunt by Barber and in the sixth on a RBI single by Justin Turner.
Zenon Figueroa went the distance for Indiana Tech and was touched for 14 hits, including three by Warner Southern second baseman Mark Dunsford, in absorbing his seventh loss against six wins. Dunsford and catcher Daniel Barnett each scored two runs for the winners.
In an earlier loser-out game Monday, Dallas Baptist, Tex., ripped Biola, Calif., 14-0. Later today, Western Oregon plays Birmingham Southern, Ala., and host Lewis-Clark State takes on Bellevue, Neb.
