LEWISTON, Idaho – Unranked Western Oregon used a pair of six-run innings to beat third-ranked Birmingham-Southern, Ala., 16-8 Monday in a winner’s bracket game at the 45th annual NAIA Avista Baseball World Series at Harris Field.The Wolves (41-18) advance to a 7 p.m. game Tuesday against the winner of tonight’s final game between host Lewis-Clark State and Bellevue, Neb. The Panthers (51-11) will play Dallas Baptist (Tex.), at noon in a loser-out game.
First baseman Bryce Gardinier had four hits and shortstop Mark Hernandez and catcher Toby Bottorff each drove in three runs to key a 20-hit Western Oregon attack. Bottorff also picked two bases runners off first base.
Gardinier had a two-run single as Western scored six runs in the top of the sixth to open up a 9-2 lead. But, Birmingham-Southern scored five runs in its half of the inning, three on a home run by Cory Hamrick to get right back into the game.
Western Oregon, however, then put the game away with a six-run seventh, which featured a two-run home run by Andy Ortmayer and a three-run blast by Hernandez.
Hernandez finished the game with three hits. Joey Price, Travis Chetock, Ortmayer, Josh Nelson, Craig Towne and Bottorff all had two hits for the Wolves. Adam Pease, John Driskill, Conner Robertson, David Driskill and Ricky Gomez each had two hits for the Panthers. Robertson hit a solo home run in the ninth.
Donny Martin pitched the first 5 2/3 innings and struck out seven hitters to earn his eighth win against three losses. Lindsay McCarger surrendered just two hits and one run over the final 3 1/3 innings to earn a save. Duane Chapman, the first of five Birmingham pitchers, was charged with his second loss of the season against 10 wins.
In earlier loser-out games Monday, Dallas Baptist (Tex.), ripped Biola ( Calif.), 14-0, and Warner Southern, (Fla.), eliminated Indiana Tech 6-1.
