Game 17: Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) 10, Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) 3

May 30, 2001 at Harris Field

LEWISTON, Idaho – Seth Bobbitt pitched a four-hitter and John Driskill drove in three runs, including one during a crucial four-run second inning, as Birmingham-Southern, Ala., defeated previously unbeaten Lewis-Clark State 10-3 Wednesday in the 45th annual NAIA Avista Baseball World Series at Harris Field.

The Panthers’ win left three teams all with one loss in the World Series. The host Warriors (54-13) will draw a bye into Friday’s 7 p.m. championship contest. Bellevue, Neb. (49-17) will play Birmingham-Southern (53-11) Thursday at 7 with the winner joining LCSC in the title contest.

Bellevue stayed alive by defeating Western Oregon 12-7 Wednesday.

Bobbitt, who walked three and struck out eight, gave up two runs and two hits, including a two-run single to Trevor Brown in the first inning, but allowed just two hits over the final eight innings to earn his second victory of the World Series. In 16 innings, he has allowed just 10 hits and five runs. Bobbitt is now 11-3 on the season.

Meanwhile, his teammates scored twice in their half of the first – on an error and a balk – and then snapped the tie with four runs in the second. The go-ahead run scored on an error. Adam Pease and Driskill followed with RBI singles and the Panthers then got another run on a wild pitch.

Birmingham-Southern later added a single run in the fifth, two in the sixth on Driskill’s ninth home run of the season and one more in the seventh. Kurt Koshelnik hit a solo home run in the eighth for LCSC’s final run.

Birmingham-Southern outhit Lewis-Clark State 11-4 as Driskill led the way with three hits. Adam Pease and Conner Robertson had two each. No Warrior had more than one hit. Brendan Ryan went hitless in four at bats and had his 19-game batting streak snapped.

Chris Mabeus pitched the first three innings for the Warriors and suffered his first career loss at LCSC in 20 decisions. He posted an 11-0 record last season and is now 8-1 this season.
