LEWISTON, Idaho – Seth Bobbitt allowed just six hits and didn’t walk a batter and Birmingham-Southern,Ala., banged out 15 hits, including six doubles, in defeating Ohio Dominican 13-2 in the second game of the NAIA Baseball World Series at Harris Field Friday.
Birmingham-Southern (51-10) earned a second-round bye with the victory and now advances to a 3 p.m. game Monday against either Western Oregon (39-18) or Dallas Baptist, Tex. (39-16). Those two teams play Saturday at 3 p.m. Ohio Dominican (36-18) faces Warner Southern, Fla (51-15) Saturday at 9 a.m. in a loser’s out contest.
Bobbitt, who struck out four batters, surrendered single runs in the fourth and seventh innings in recording his 10th win against three losses. Kyle Mackie singled in Ohio Dominican’s first run. Chad Rober got the Ohio school on the scoreboard in the seventh with a home run blast to left field.
Birmingham-Southern scored two runs in the first, then broke the game open with five in the third. Conner Robertson, Jason Avery and designated hitter Matt Lambert all had RBI doubles in the inning and shortstop Ricky Gomez capped off the frame with a two-run single.
Gomez finished the game with three hits in five at bats and drove in four runs. He drove in a run with a double in the seventh, then plated another run in the eighth with a single as Birmingham scored twice to win the game on the 10-run rule.
Adam Pease also had three hits for the winners.
John Driskill, Robertson, Avery and Lambert had two
each. Both of Driskill’s hits
were two-baggers.
Brian Karshner was the only Ohio Dominican player with more than one hit. He had two singles.
