Game 4: Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) 10, Mobile (Ala.) 4

LEWISTON, Idaho – Catcher Trevor Brown had three hits and three Lewis-Clark State pitchers combined for 14 strikeouts as the host Warriors outscored the University of Mobile, Ala., 10-4, Friday to complete the first day of the 2001 Avista NAIA World Series at Harris Field.

LCSC (51-12), which has won eight straight will play Indiana Tech (47-22) Saturday at 7 p.m. in a second-round game. In loser out games Saturday, Warner Southern, Fla. (51-15), and Ohio Dominican (36-18) will play at 9 a.m. and Biola, Calif. (45-12), will play Mobile(41-19) at noon. In a winner’s bracket game, Western Oregon (39-18) will play Dallas Baptist, Tex. (39-16) at 3 p.m.

Lewis-Clark State, the two-time defending NAIA champions, scored in five different innings in disposing of Mobile. Brown had a RBI double in a three-run first inning. He homered in the seventh and singled in the eighth. He also reach twice on base on balls.

Center fielder Kurt Koshelnik also had a big night for the Warriors, driving in three runs with a pair of triples.

LCSC outhit Mobile by just a 9-8 margin, but drew eight walks and made the most of its hits. Joe Parker and Jeffrey White led Mobile with two hits, but the Rams failed to get an extra base hit and drew just two walks.

Meanwhile, J.R. Crider came out of the bullpen to earn his ninth win against one loss, allowing just three hits in four innings. He walked one and struck out six and was charged with two runs, one earned. Wes Hutchison, last year’s tournament Most Valuable Player, gave up just one hit and struck out five over the final three innings to record his fifth save of the season.

Korey Melancon was tagged for only his second loss of the season against 14 wins. Melancon was charged with all 10 runs, seven earned, in 7 2/3 innings of work.

In earlier games Friday, Western Oregon edged Warner Southern, Fla., 9-8; Birmingham-Southern, Ala., defeated Ohio Dominican, 13-2, and Bellevue, Neb., defeated Biola, Calif. 13-3.
