LEWISTON, Idaho – Ryan Beaver’s two-run home run in the first inning sparked Biola (Calif.), to a 19-2 win over Mobile, Ala., Saturday in a loser-out game at the 45th annual Avista NAIA World Series at Harris Field.The Eagles scored in every inning in posting their 46th win against 12 losses. Biola advances to a noon game Monday against the loser of tonight’s game between Bellevue, Neb., and Lewis-Clark State. Mobile completed its season with a record of 41-20.
Biola scored two runs in each of its first three at bats, then added four in the fourth, sixth in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the seventh in crushing the Rams. Mobile got its only runs in the third and fifth innings on RBI singles by Jackie Blanchard and Sam Driver.
Beaver’s home run, his 19th of the season, was the first of three four-baggers for the Eagles in the contest. David Munoz hit his 12th of the year in the sixth and Joel Schelling stroked a two-run home run in the seventh, his first of the 2001 campaign.
Biola outhit Mobile 19-6. Munoz led the way with three safeties, while Beaver, Mark Wade and Matt Cardamone had two each. Beaver, starting pitcher Ben Orr and Wade each drove in three runs. Beaver crossed the plate four times.
Orr pitched the first five innings to earn his 10th win against one loss. He surrendered four hits, while walking two and fanning six. Matt Milstead was touched for four hits and six runs in two plus innings. The loss dropped Millstead to 8-7 on the season.
Earlier Saturday, Warner Southern, Fla., eliminated Ohio Dominican 15-13. The second round of the tournament concludes with Western Oregon taking on Dallas Baptist at 4:10 p.m. and host Lewis-Clark State, the two-time defending champion, battling Bellevue, Neb., in the nightcap.
