Game 6: Warner Southern (Fla.) 15, Ohio Dominican 13

LEWISTON, Idaho – Catcher Daniel Barnett hit his 16th home run of the season and drove in four runs to lead Warner Southern, Fla., to a 15-13 win over Ohio Dominican in a loser-out game at the 45th annual NAIA Avista Baseball World Series at Harris Field Saturday.

The Royals, who improved to 52-15, face another loser-out game Monday at 9 a.m. against either Western Oregon or Dallas Baptist, Tex. The Panthers completed their season with a record of 36-19.

Ohio Dominican built a 4-1 lead at one point, but Barnett hit a three-run home run to spark a six-run third inning and then added a RBI single in a four-run fourth. Warner then scored three runs in the fifth to open up a 14-5 lead.

But, the Panthers then staged a remarkable comeback, scoring four runs in the sixth and four in the ninth. Ohio Dominican had the tying runs on base before reliever Grant Lykins got Kyle Mackie to ground out for the final out. Starter Ben Ally earned his 14th win against two losses despite being roughed up for 16 hits and 13 runs, 10 earned, in 8 2/3 innings.

Second baseman Brian Karshner had five of the 16 hits off Ally, including a two-run double in the sixth and RBI singles in the second and ninth. Karshner finished his World Series with seven hits in 10 at bats.

Mackie, Pat Ranalli, Wilfredo Colon, Chad Reber and Jeff Kidd all had two hits for Ohio Dominican, which outhit the Florida school 17-15. Mackie drove in three runs with a pair of home runs, his 12th and 13th of the season.

Justin Turner led the Royals with three hits, while Scott Hilinski, Mark Dunsford, Matt Barnett, Devin Butler and Daniel Barnett all had two hits. Daniel Barnett is now six of 10 in the series and has eight RBI. Matt Barnett and Dunsford each had three RBI in Saturday’s game. Turner hit a solo home run in the seventh, his 15th of the season.
