LEWISTON, Idaho – Josh Nelson, who didn’t walk a batter, scattered 12 hits and also hit a two-run home run in the second inning, to lead Western Oregon to a 5-4 win over Dallas Baptist, Tex., in a second-round winner’s bracket game at the 45th annual Avista NAIA Baseball World Series Saturday.Western Oregon (40-18) will play Birmingham-Southern, Ala. (51-10) Monday at 3 p.m. Dallas Baptist will face Warner Southern, Fla. (52-15) in a loser-out game Monday at 9 a.m.
Western Oregon jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second inning scoring on a ground out by Mark Hernandez and a two-out, two-run home run by Nelson, who also handles designated hitter duties for the Wolves. Western then added single runs in the fifth on a single by Joey Price and in the seventh on a one-base hit by Travis Chetock.
The latter run gave Western Oregon a 5-2 lead and turned out to be the game winner when the Patriots scored twice in the seventh. Kris Coffey drove in the first run with a triple and then scored on a single by Cody Sadler.
Sadler, who had four hits in four at bats, also produced a run for Dallas Baptist in the fifth with his fourth home run of the season. The Patriots also scored in the third on an error.
Dallas Baptist had an opportunity to tie the game in the ninth. Third baseman Daniel Schley was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Pinch-runner Eric Darjean advanced to second on a sacrifice, but then with one out, Darjean was thrown out at third by Wolf catcher Toby Bottorff trying to steal. Nelson, who improved to 6-3 with the victory, then got leadoff hitter Steven Berry on a comebacker to end the game.
Sadler accounted for a third of Dallas Baptist’s safeties as the Patriots outhit the Wolves 12-9. Catcher Mike Dilley and first baseman Chad Shindle had two hits each. Price, Chetock and Craig Towne each had two hits off of Dallas hurler Kenny Trapp, who surrendered just one earned run. Trapp, now 14-4 on the season, walked one and struck out two batters.
The win was Western Oregon’s second one-run victory of the tournament. It rallied from an 8-3 deficit to beat Warner Southern, Fla. 9-8 Friday. Those are the only two one-run games of the tournament through the first seven contests.
Earlier Saturday, Warner Southern, Fla., eliminated Ohio Dominican 15-13, and Biola, Calif., ousted Mobile, Ala., 19-2. Host Lewis-Clark State, the two-time defending champion, plays Bellevue, Neb., tonight at 7:10 p.m. in the final game of the second round.
